Revision as of 14:53, 11 January 2011
This is a list of episodes for the farcical retrogaming video gaming review series The Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN). The show revolves around reviews that involve acerbic rants about video games, generally being 8-bit games and also usually featuring licensed characters.
Episodes 1 to 17 are included on the Angry Video Game Nerd: Volume 1 DVD set. Episodes 20 to 39 as well as a scene from episode 19 are included on the Volume 2 DVD set, which spans three discs. Episodes 40 to 62 are included on Volume 3, which again spans three discs. On the DVD, episode 46 has been shortened to cover only Super Mario Bros. 3.
On March 17, 2010, it was announced that Rolfe was suffering from burnout as a result of consistently writing, directing, and starring in the videos, and that the show would be entering a brief hiatus. It was scheduled to return sometime in May 2010; however, an episode was released on April 30, 2010. Episodes are scheduled to be released the first or second Wednesday of each month,[1] as opposed to two episodes per month due to other work.

Episodes
Season 1 (2004-2006)
Episode | Episode name | Length | Date | Games reviewed and episode notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest | 09:25 | April 8, 2006 (YT) | Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES). First review of a NES game, as well as his first review of a cartridge-based game, and his first review of a licensed game for NES. Also his first review ever. The Only review in Nerd history where we don't see the Nerd's true form. This episode was originally created on May 16, 2004 [2] and previously only available as a part of a film compilation tape with other short films created or directed by James Rolfe.[3] The Nerd re-visited this game five years later in Castlevania, Part II, giving an honest opinion. |
2 | Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde | 06:28 | April 8, 2006 (YT) | Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (NES). This episode was originally created on May 16, 2004 [4] and previously only available as a part of a film compilation tape with other short films created or directed by James Rolfe.[3] First episode to have the Nerd on camera. The game was donated to Rolfe by friend and title card artist, Mike Matei. [citation needed] The line "Why don't the weapons do anything?" from the full theme originated from this episode. |
3 | The Karate Kid | 04:29 | Apr 8, 2006 (YT) | The Karate Kid (NES). This episode was intended to be the last in the then-trilogy. [5] |
4 | Roger Rabbit | 03:46 | Apr 24, 2006 (YT) | Who Framed Roger Rabbit (NES). Matei convinced Rolfe to continue making reviews because he found them funny, even though it was intended to be only a trilogy. This is when Rolfe and Matei uploaded the first 4 videos to Youtube, where the show started gaining popularity. The closing line "I want to nail Roger Rabbit to the fucking cross" was considered the Nerd's best moment of 2006.Cite error: The <ref> tag has too many names (see the help page). The line "Why is the password so long?" comes from this episode.

93 | Zelda II | 15:07 | August 4, 2010 (GT) | Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (NES)
The Nerd references this as being commonly requested, and while he does a review in traditional AVGN style, he points out that it is not that bad. Kevin Finn reappears as the Game Graphics Glitch Gremlin. He also references confusing monster titles in the first Zelda, including Darknut, Like-Like, Tektite, Pols Voice, Gidbo, Ghini, Rope, Keese and humorously, Rock. The opening also includes part of the Zelda song at the end of the last video of the CD-I review. The Power Glove makes an appearance towards the end. While the Nerd notes that he has never beaten the game's final boss, he actually manages to defeat the boss with the use of the Glove. |

96 | Lester the Unlikely | 10:44 | Nov 4, 2010 (GT) | Lester the Unlikely (SNES), The Flowers Of Robert Mapplethorpe (CD-I)
The Nerd calls the game an "experiment to create the worst video game character in history" and makes humorous jokes about the game's "sequels". He also returns briefly to the CD-I, stating that he would rather play The Flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe instead, but changes his mind. |
