Thruway
Note that highways under the Thruway Authority do not use the same signed highway numbering or reference route system as the NYSDOT highways. The only numbers (aside from perhaps very internally within the Authority) used are Interstate designations. While most of the roadway in the Thruway system bears a signed Interstate designation, it does not appear on reference markers on NYSDOT Interstates. See the Thruway article for details regarding signage. Note also that the portions of Interstates run by NYSDOT that are also run by NYSTA at other points often get a special number for their reference markers. For instance, while the markers on the Major Deegan Expressway would normally just say "87", they say "871" to disambiguate it from the Thruway-run section and the northern NYSDOT portion, the Northway.
