Tane Ikai
Tane Ikai (猪飼 たね, Ikai Tane, 18 January 1879 – 12 July 1995) was at the time of her death the world's second-oldest living person behind 120-year-old French woman Jeanne Calment, the oldest living Japanese person, the first Japanese person to reach age 115–116 and the oldest Japanese person ever (if excluding Shigechiyo Izumi who was believed to have been older) thought until being surpassed by Misao Okawa on 27 August 2014.
Ikai was born in the village of Kansei, Aichi Prefecture (now part of Minato-ku, Nagoya), as the third daughter of six children of a farming family. She married at age 20, had three sons and a daughter (all of whom she outlived), and separated from her husband when she was 38 in 1917. She entered a nursing home at the age of 89 in 1968. In 1988, at the age of 109, she suffered a stroke and was moved to a hospital, where she remained bedridden for the rest of her life.[20] She died on 12 July 1995, aged 116 years, 175 days. An autopsy indicated that she died of kidney failure.[20]
Denzo Ishizaki
Denzo Ishizaki (石崎 伝蔵, Ishizaki Denzō, 20 October 1886 – 29 April 1999) was for a short time Japan's oldest living person and the world's oldest living man, from February to April 1999, and when he died the oldest Japanese man ever until being surpassed by Yukichi Chuganji on 30 September 2001.[12] A former elementary school teacher and town assembly member, Ishizaki lived in Kansago, Ibaraki Prefecture, where he died of multiple organ failure on 29 April 1999 at the age of 112 years, 191 days.[21]
Mitoyo Kawate
Mitoyo Kawate (川手 ミトヨ, Kawate Mitoyo, 15 May 1889 – 13 November 2003) became the world's oldest living woman after the death of Mae Harrington on 29 December 2002, and the world's oldest living person after the death of Japanese man Yukichi Chuganji on 28 September 2003. On 31 October 2003, after Kamato Hongo's death, Kawate was recognized as the oldest living person in the world,[22][23] though in fact, Kawate became oldest living person in the world on 28 September 2003, because Kamato Hongo's record was revoked in 2012.[24]
A resident of Hiroshima, she worked on a farm until injuring her hands at the age of 99. In 1945, two days after the Atomic bombing of Hiroshima, she entered Hiroshima city in order to look for acquaintances.[22][25] She was taken to a hospital shortly before her death from pneumonia.[22][23] Her death left Ramona Trinidad Iglesias-Jordan of Puerto Rico the oldest documented person in the world,[24] though this was not recognized by Guinness World Records until 2004 (Charlotte Benkner of the U.S. had been given the title in the interim).[23]
Koto Okubo
Koto Okubo (大久保 琴, Ōkubo Koto, 24 December 1897 – 12 January 2013) was, at the time of her death aged 115 years, 19 days, the oldest living woman and second-oldest living person (behind Jiroemon Kimura) in Japan since the death of Chiyono Hasegawa on 2 December 2011 and since the death of Italian-American woman Dina Manfredini on 17 December 2012 the world's oldest living woman and second-oldest living person. Okubo had been living in a nursing home in Kawasaki, Kanagawa with her son and died of pneumonia.[26][27][28] The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare did not announce her name officially; only her residence and age were initially released.[29]
The name of Okubo was finally reported by the Japanese press on 14 September 2012,[26] and on the same day, Okubo was verified and added to the GRG list and Guinness World Records.[17]. After Okubo's death, Misao Okawa became the oldest recognized living woman.[17]
Misao Okawa
Misao Okawa (大川 ミサヲ, Ōkawa Misao, sometimes romanized as Misawo Okawa; 5 March 1898 – 1 April 2015) was the first Japanese person to reach age 117 and the oldest Japanese person ever until Nabi Tajima surpassed her age on 31 August 2017. She became the oldest living woman in Japan and the world upon the death of 115-year-old Koto Okubo on 12 January 2013 and also the oldest living person upon the death of 116-year-old Jiroemon Kimura on 12 June 2013.
Okawa was born in the Tenma district (present-day Kita-ku) of Osaka as the fourth daughter of a draper. From 1997, she lived at a nursing home in Higashisumiyoshi-ku, Osaka.[30] She married Yukio Okawa in 1919 and had three children (two daughters and one son), of whom her son, Hiroshi, and daughter Shizuyo survived her.[31] Her husband died on 20 June 1931 at age 36.[32] She had four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.[31][33] She was able to walk until she was 110, when she began using a wheelchair to prevent falls. She could, however, propel herself using her wheelchair.[31]
Okawa said that sushi and sleep were the reasons why she lived so long.[34] On her 117th birthday, she said that her life seemed short. When asked about the secret of her longevity, she replied, jokingly, "I wonder about that too."[35]
Okawa died at her nursing home residence in Higashisumiyoshi-ku, Osaka, Japan, at 6:58 am, on 1 April 2015 aged 117 years, 27 days[30][36] after suffering heart failure.[37] At the time of her death, Okawa was the fifth-oldest verified person ever recorded.[38] Following the death of Okawa, American woman Gertrude Weaver (who also died just six days later) became the world's oldest living person[39] and an anonymous woman born on 15 March 1900 and living in Tokyo became Japan's oldest living person.[40] Okawa was the last verified living Japanese person born in the 1800s.[41]
Kane Tanaka
Kane Tanaka (田中カ子, Tanaka Kane, born 2 January 1903) is the oldest living people in Japan and the world since the death of 117-year-old Chiyo Miyako on 22 July 2018. At the time of Miyako's death, Tanaka lived in a nursing home in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka, Fukuoka Prefecture; she was still in good health and occupied her time by playing board games and taking short walks in the facility's hallways.[42] She credits family, sleep and hope as her secrets for longevity.[43]
Masazō Nonaka
Masazō Nonaka (野中 正造, Nonaka Masazō, born 25 July 1905) is, at the age of 118 years, 333 days, currently the world's oldest living man since the death of 113-year-old Spaniard Francisco Núñez Olivera on 30 January 2018[a]. Nonaka became the oldest living man in Japan upon the death of 112-year-old Masamitsu Yoshida on 29 October 2016.[44]
Nonaka married Hatsuno Nonaka and had 5 children (of whom 2 are living as of April 2018). He now spends most of his time in a wheelchair and credits his longevity with eating sweets and using hot springs.[45][46]
