Lex Fridman (/'lɛks 'friːdmæn/; FREED-man) is a Russian-American computer scientist, podcaster, and an artificial intelligence researcher and teacher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is known for hosting a podcast and YouTube series, the Lex Fridman Podcast in which he interviews a wide variety of guests.
Early life
Fridman was born in Chkalovsk (which was then in Soviet Russia) on 15 August 1983, and grew up in Moscow.[2] He is primarily of Ukrainian-Jewish descent.[3][4] His Jewish father, plasma physicist Alexander Fridman,[5] was born in Kyiv and serves as the John A. Nyheim Chair Professor and Director of the C.J. Nyheim Plasma Institute at Drexel University's College of Engineering.[6][7] His maternal grandmother was born and raised in Kharkiv,[8] and his maternal grandfather was a machine gunner in the Ukrainian branch of the Red Army against the Nazis during World War II.[9]
In 1994, Fridman moved to the U.S. with his family at the age of 11. He attended Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Illinois, graduating in 2001.[2] He then went on to obtain BS and MS degrees in computer science at Drexel University in 2010,[10] and completed his PhD in electrical and computer engineering at Drexel in 2014.[11] His PhD dissertation, Learning of Identity from Behavioral Biometrics for Active Authentication, was completed under the advisement of engineering educators Moshe Kam and Steven Weber and sought to "investigate the problem of active authentication on desktop computers and mobile devices".[12]
Career
Computer science
Fridman's career began at Google, where he worked on machine learning.[13] He currently serves as a research scientist at MIT.[14][15][16][17] In 2017, he worked on computer vision, deep learning, and planning algorithms for semi-autonomous vehicles.[18] More recent contributions in his field of study have involved research into human-centered artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicle development, deep learning, and personal robotics.[13][19]
Lex Fridman Podcast
Fridman began his podcast in 2018,[20] initially as part of the MIT course 6.S099 on artificial general intelligence.[21] Its original title was the Artificial Intelligence Podcast, which was later changed to the Lex Fridman Podcast to reflect the wider range of topics it would address.[22][23] Fridman uses the podcast to discuss "AI, science, technology, history, philosophy and the nature of intelligence, consciousness, love, and power".[24] The podcast is structured as a long-form interview program. Interviews are conducted in-person, typically running two to four hours in length.
The podcast is known for its wide variety of guests and has featured author Michael Malice,[25] chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen,[26][27] author Douglas Murray,[28] investor Ray Dalio,[29] biologist Richard Dawkins,[30] political commentator and streamer Destiny,[31] entrepreneur Jack Dorsey,[32] martial artist Roger Gracie,[33] musician Grimes,[34] video game designer Todd Howard,[35] businessman and technology entrepreneur Elon Musk,[36][37] psychologist Jordan Peterson,[38][39] podcaster Joe Rogan,[40] record producer Rick Rubin,[41] political commentator Ben Shapiro,[42] martial artist Georges St-Pierre,[43] filmmaker Oliver Stone,[44] musician Ye,[45][46] entrepreneur Mark Zuckerberg,[47] and Demis Hassabis.[48]
As of December 2022, Fridman's YouTube channel (which hosts the podcast episodes alongside other videos by Fridman) has more than 2.4 million subscribers with over 328 million views, while his secondary channel consisting entirely of highlights from the podcast has more than 770,000 subscribers with over 230 million views.[49]
Personal life
In his spare time, Fridman enjoys playing the guitar and piano.[3][50][51] He also practises Brazilian jiu jitsu and holds a first-degree black belt under Phil Migliarese.[52] He has competed in several grappling competitions, most notably in a match against Garry Tonon in 2013.[53]
