Larry Murphy is an Irish man, aged forty five, a married father of two originally from the Baltinglass area, Co. Wicklow, Ireland. He is a skilled carpenter by trade. Murphy is a convicted rapist and a suspected serial killer. In 2001 Murphy was convicted of kidnapping, repeatedly raping and attempting to murder a young Carlow woman in the Wicklow Mountains. |
During the ordeal he kidnapped the woman and locked her in the boot of his car. He then drove to Kilkea in Co. Kildare where he repeatedly raped and beat her. She was then locked in the boot again while he drove to the Spinans Cross in the Wicklow Mountains where he again raped her. The woman began to fight back and Murphy produced a plastic bag, which he placed over her head in an attempt to suffocate her. He was forced to stop his assault when two late night hunters came across the scene and recognised Murphy. Murphy fled the area and returned to his home. |
The hunters then escorted the terrified woman to the police station in Baltinglass where they identified Murphy as her attacker. Murphy was arrested the next morning when members of the Garda Siochana (the Irish Police force ) came to his home. He knew why they were there and admitted everything. Murphy was later tried and convicted of rape and attempted murder. He was released on 12th August 2010 after serving ten years. His release caused a public outcry, particularly as he had refused treatment while in prison and never demonstrated any remorse. The uproar was was also due to Murphy's suspected involvement in some of Ireland's most famous missing persons cases. |
During questioning about the woman's injuries it was reported that Murphy commented "Well, she's alive isn't she?" and calmly stated that "she was lucky", showing no sign of remorse or guilt. Murphy was sentenced to fifteen years (Judge Carney taking into account his guilty plea which spared his victim having to testify in court) and served just ten. However Murphy was sentenced before the Sex offenders Act was introduced in 2001 so he is not subject to post release supervision order. |

==Suspect== |
Although only convicted of this crime, Murphy is regarded as being the prime suspect in the disappearance of a number of young women in the mid to late 1990s in the Leinster area, when Murphy was known to be living in the region. These women have become known in popular parlance as "Ireland's vanished women". The list of Ireland's vanished women include: |
# Annie McCarrick, (1993) |
# Jo-Jo Dullard, (1995) |
# Fiona Pender, (1996) |
# Fiona Sinnott, (1998) |
# Deirdre Jacob, (1998) |
No other such disappearances occurred while Murphy was in prison. |
In particular Murphy is suspected of being responsible for the disappearances of Annie McCarrick, Jo-Jo Dullard and Deirdre Jacob, all of whom vanished closed the area where Murphy lived at the time. |
The bodies of these individuals have never been found despite massive searches and investigations for over 10 years. Despite intensive questioning by Gardai, Murphy denies any knowledge or involvement in the disappearance of these women. |
In more recent times it has been speculated that Murphy collaborated in at least some of the suspected crimes with the notorious John Crerar, an ex army sergeant convicted of the murder of Phyllis Murphy. Witness reports place both Crerar and Murphy together inside the gates of a disused quarry in The Swan, County Laois, near where Crerar worked as a security guard. Crerar was often found "digging and burning stuff" in this same quarry. On other occasions a resident living near the quarry claimed of hearing blood curdling screams and, later, obnoixious odours coming from the partially flooded quarry. <br /> |
To date it is not believed that the quarry has been searched by authorities. Further circumstantial evidence points to the apparent disappearance of two cars owned by Larry Murphy, there being no documents of its sale or scrapping. |
==Release from prison== |
There was widespread opposition upon his early release, and the residents of his hometown, Baltinglass, announced that he would not be welcome in the village. He has become widely referred to in the Irish media as the "Beast of Baltinglass". After he was released he was considered a high risk offender and Murphy was visited by a member of the Gardai every month. |
While it was previously known that Mr. Murphy had fled the country and taken up residence in the south of Spain, where he was under surveillance by police. Shortly afterwards he moved to Amsterdam. During his time there witnesses, hitherto unaware of his past, reported that he frequented several bars but was quiet and kept to himself. He drank and smoked cannabis regularly and at times approached and attempted to strike up conversation with young women. In time the media became aware of his location and under the increased scrutiny from Dutch police, Murphy fled into Spain through France.. |
Living in the South of Spain, in late May 2011, Murphy's wallet and passport were allegedly stolen while engaging the services of a prostitute. This lead him to consult the Spanish authorities in a bid to travel back to Ireland to obtain a new passport. As a result of his background becoming known, there was much dissention among the local population regarding his presence there. Two weeks later, after his new documents were in order, he returned to southern Spain. |
===Media Interview=== |
In January 2011, Murphy was the subject of an interview by the Irish Observer, an Irish current affairs and news blog. During the interview he was questioned about his regrets and whether he thought his punishment was severe enough. Murphy seemed very calm and confident during the interview and pointed out that he had served the sentence which was decided by his peers. |
