Lab Snacks are humorous cardboard boxes filled with pre-packaged treats like nuts, pretzels, granola bars, and fruit snacks shipped with all orders from Thorlabs, Inc.[1] Lab Snacks are not available for purchase but are partnered with the “Hungry for your Thoughts” initiative, where the President of Thorlabs, Alex Cable, encourages customers to reach out to him about the products, the business, and photonics research. [2] [3]
Customers have often found creative uses for the Lab Snacks boxes once their contents have been consumed. The boxes have been used for lab storage or even as part of a setup for an Arduino enclosure. [4] [5] Others have shared their love of Lab Snacks through comics. [6]
History:
The idea for Lab Snacks originated in the middle of the night during a catalog effort when the marketing team was trying to hit a chapter deadline for the newest version of the catalog. During late night discussions of what to include in the catalog, one employee jokingly questioned when food would be added next. The night’s witty banter planted a seed that was pursued weeks after the catalog was completed. SF Design in Michigan (now under Marketing Associates) was asked to help with graphic design for the snack box concept. Steve Fritsch designed the first snack box featuring Chilly Dog. The snack box concept was run as a trial in the winter of 2005. The box featured a green dog dressed in winter gear in a snowy setting and contained winter-themed snacks like hot chocolate.
Lab Snacks soon became a constant in every Thorlabs order as a way of showing gratitude to the photonics community. The Lab Snacks box was redesigned, taking on its more familiar red color and featuring the dog representing the company at the time, beginning with Dog Eat Dog. [7] The first Lab Snacks were sent out in June 2006. A smaller version called Lab Snacks Lite made its first appearance in the summer of 2008. The contents of the box have changed over time reflecting healthier snacking choices in more recent years. [8]
