LATAM Airlines Group, or LATAM, is a new airline group to be formed by the merger of LAN Airlines and TAM Airlines.[1][2][3] The two airlines plan to continue flying with separate brands in the short term, but expect substantial synergies from merging their operations. The merger is expected to be complete by mid-2011.[4] Enrique Cueto, the current CEO of LAN, has been announced as the CEO of the new company;[5] Mauricio Rolim Amaro, currently vice-chairman of TAM, would become chairman of LATAM.[6]
The two airlines signed a non-binding agreement on 13 August 2010, and a binding agreement, was signed on 19th of January 2011[7].
Their main competitors upon the South American continent will be Synergy Group's Avianca-TACA conglomerate of airline companies. Unlike the Oneworld (of which LAN is a member), Star Alliance (of which TAM is a member) and SkyTeam airline alliances, this link-up is under the direction of one unified and merged business enterprise rather than an association of separately owned and managed airline firms with similar business goals open to the inclusion of new members.
Fleet
In August 2010, LAN and TAM said they had a combined fleet of over 240 aircraft, with more than 220 additional aircraft currently on order. Synergies are expected to lead to network expansion rather than reduced orders.[8]
