Dr. Ketan Desai is the former president of Medical Council of India and President Elect (2016) of the World Medical Association who now serves as Head of Urology department at B.J. Medical College.[1] He is currently a member of Gujarat Medical Council. [2]
Early life
Desai is a native from Gujarat’s Maroli village. He completed his school graduation from Hansraj Morarji Public School, where his father Dirubhai Desai was a teacher for the primary section. After school, he completed his MBBS and Mch in urology in the year 1983 from B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad .[3]
Career
After graduating from B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad in 1987, he became the head of urology department in the year 1996 and served as Head till 2015. He became the youngest head ever in Indian history. He later became syndicate and senate member of the Gujarat University with most of the time uncontested. He became president of Gujarat Medical Council in the 1990s and became president of Medical Council of India in 1996, 2001 and in 2009. He has also served as president of Indian Medical Association and Dental Council of India.
He has also served as National President of Indian Medical Association in 2001 and member, Dental Council of India for last more than a decade. He later become president of World Medical Association.[3]. His contribution to the cause of National and Medical Education has been immense in as much as it was during his Presidential tenure of the Medical Council of India in the year 2009 the concept of the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) National Eligibility and Entrance Test was mooted for the first time in the country and the required detailed analytical recommendation was made to the concerned authority including the Govt. of India.
His quest for rationalization of Minimum Standard Requirement Regulations facilitating the cause of medical education is enviable. His emphasis on ethical conduct of medical practitioners resulted in appropriate incorporation in Code of Medical Ethics, the provisions, which disrupted the unholy nexus between the pharmaceutical companies and the medical professionals.
His initiative in update of the regulation on starting of a medical college resulted in incorporation of stringent punitive measures, so as to ensure required compliance of the governing regulations by the private operators in medical education, which ended in the hoodwinking practices routinely adopted by them.

Controversy
The MCI was dissolved on 15 May 2010 following a case framed by the CBI against Dr. Ketan Desai. The CBI however, later gave a clean chit to Dr. Ketan Desai as no case of irregularities was found against him in the disproportionate asset case. In fact the Gujarat University senate elected him as the university’s nominated member to the MCI after the case was closed against him. Going by the pace, trend and the benchmarks that have been set out by him, over a period of time in a well chartered out career, indeed he turns out to be legendary in his own right exemplary in nature and above all emulative in character.
