One of eight siblings[1], Kaif was born to a Kashmiri Muslim father and an English Anglican Christian mother. She was brought up in Hawaii, and started modelling at the age of 14, when she was approached for a jewellery campaign. After that she continued modeling in London.

However, filmmakers were at first hesitant to sign her because of her linguistic shortcomings[2], such as her inability to speak Hindi[3].
