Grover was born in New Delhi, India on 23 February 1982 to a Punjabi Sikh family.[7] He has one younger brother.[8] When Grover was of 2 years of age his family faced a bit of distress due to riots in India.[9] When Grover was young his family moved to Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. He did his schooling at International Indian School Dammam. In 2000, he moved to Mumbai, India, and pursued a degree in Hotel Management from IHM Mumbai, Dadar Catering College. He was also part of a band called the Thousand Decibels during his college days.[7] After completing his degree he worked as a Marketing Executive in the Sheraton Hotel in Oman.[7]
Career
In 2004 he moved back to Mumbai, India, then pursued a career in modelling and participated in the Gladrags Manhunt Contest and won the award of the most popular model.[7] In 2013, Grover was featured at number 13 in Asia's top 50 Sexiest Men on the Planet list.[10][11][12] In 2014 he was featured at number 12 in Asia's top 50 Sexiest Man on Planet list.[13] He has been featured multiple times in Times Top 50 most desirable men list. In 2010, he was at number 24, 29 in 2011, 39 in 2012,[14] 18 in 2013,[15] and was listed number 19 in 2014.[16] Grover is also one of the highest paid Indian Television Actors.[17]
He began his television career with Balaji Telefilms' Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi on MTV India.[7][18]In 2007 Grover got the show Dill Mill Gayye, a medical youth drama.[19] The Times of India reported that Grover became an "instant hit" and a "teenage icon" therefore making the show have the best ratings on the channel STAR One.[20]Times of India also stated "TV heartthrob Karan Singh Grover's name is enough to explain the fan following that the actor enjoys. His sheer presence on the small screen is enough to drive his female fans crazy. The actor, who become a youth sensation as Armaan Malik in Dill Mill Gayye enjoyed all the attention...in the cult youth show."[21]
Whilst shooting for the show he also participated in a few reality shows, he hosted Zara Nachke Dikha,[18] contested and became a finalist in the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (season 3)[22] and also participated in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi.[23] It was reported that Grover would routinely report hours late for the shoot of Dill Mill Gayye and that Cinevistaas Limited were planning to sue him to recover their losses.[24] Grover left the show for a while, but returned to the show after 6 months because of fans' demands. [25] The show ended on 29 October 2010.[26] Later he hosted a Channel V India show called Perfect Couple.[27] He also acted in two shows of Cinevistaas Limited; he featured in Teri Meri Love Stories,[28] and did a cameo in Dil Dosti Dance.[29] He was also seen in advertisements of Rupa Frontline, Cleartrip.com, Indian Gem & Jewellery and Kajaria tiles.[7]
On 29 October 2012, Grover returned to daily fiction with 4 Lions Films' Qubool Hai.[30][31] Grover was paid a hefty amount because of his "formidable female fan base."[17] Due to Grover's presence, the show made a grand entry into Indian television. Times of india wrote that "Karan Singh Grover..is making his comeback on television after almost two years in a daily soap. And it is no mean feat for the broadcaster as they would want to give the best possible time SLOT to his show, Qubool Hai."[32] The show gained popularity pretty early becoming the number 2 show of Indian Television.[33]
Grover was mobbed by the public during outdoor shoots of the show, once in Bhopal, for which the maker of the show Gul Khan (producer) told Times of India "He was mobbed literally. We were scared seeing the mammoth gathering. I told my unit to get extra security so that the shoot could be completed without any hindrance. Karan had to commute in a police car for security reasons."[34] and once in Rajasthan, which Times of India described as "soon as the obsessive female fans in Jaipur learned that Karan Singh Grover was shooting for the show in the vicinity, they thronged the location in tens of thousands and within minutes, crowded him like bees on a honeypot. The situation almost got out of hand when an overzealous female fan demanded to meet Karan in person and if she wasn't allowed, threatened to jump off Amer Fort where the crew was shooting."[35]
Grover was also praised by his colleagues for his work in Qubool Hai. Kratika Sengar stated "I think Karan is one of the finest actors on television currently and I would love to work with him in the future. I have met him on the sets and think that he is a very humble and down-to-earth as a person... He is doing a fantastic job in the show (Qubool Hai). I still remember that there was a maha episode...I liked the way he presented himself in that scene. He literally had tears in his eyes. He was that natural!"[36] Gautami Kapoor also stated that she feels Grover is currently the most popular television actor and that he is acting really well in the show.[37]
Grover won two Best Actor Awards for his portrayal of Asad Ahmed Khan.[38][39] Grover's work at Qubool Hai ended at the end of 2013.[40] The channel, Zee TV, said that it had fired him because of his unprofessional behavior.[41][42] Grover denied the allegations, saying that the channel was trying to defame him, and stated that he left because his contract ended[43] and due to ill health.[44] Fans protested to bring Grover back on to the show.[45] Grover's exit caused a sizeable drop in the viewership figures of the show.[46]
In May 2014 Grover became a producer with 4 Lions Films.[47][48] He also started shooting for the Indian Film Alone which co-starred Bipasha Basu, and was directed by Bhushan Patel, it released on January 16, 2015.[49][50] Business of Cinema reported that the trailer had two million hits on YouTube, becoming the #1 video in under 48 hours with a 95% "like" ratio.[51] Grover and Bipasha Basu promoted the movie at various places including Comedy Nights with Kapil.[52] Bollywood Hungama gave a positive review to Grover for the movie and stated that "Karan Singh Grover makes a sprightly debut. He's not conscious of the camera at all. Considering he has done TV, he is high on emotional appeal. He has all the trappings of being a star."[53] Times of India also reported that Grover "won rave reviews for his performance in the film."[54]Box Office India stated that Alone had the highest opening of the four major films released in its weekend.[55] According to Bollywood Hungama Alone grossed ₹19.35 crore (US$2.4 million) domestically.[56]
Grover signed T-Series' Hate Story 3 in April 2015, it is set to release on 4th December 2015.[57] In 2015 Grover inaugurated Jack & Jones in Lucknow, Times of India reported "The occasion saw fans of the actor queing up outside the store..to catch a glimpse of the star.. a throng of excited fans"[58] Grover also endorsed Warrior Safety shows from Liberty Shoes brand.[59] Grover also became the brand ambassador of Rocky S's signature Brand RS by Rocky Star along with Bipasha Basu.[60] In September 2015 Grover will be hosting a new talk show on ABP News called "Selfie" in which he will be interviewing actors like Salman Khan and Vidya Balan[61]
