Kanaal Art Foundation (Kanaal vzw) was a center for contemporary art in Kortrijk, Belgium, cofounded in 1987 by Belgian art historian Catherine de Zegher and senator Stefaan De Clerck.[1][failed verification] The foundation was initially located within a textile factory and later organized exhibitions across the city of Kortrijk, including the Beguinage. The foundation's program focused on emerging international artists with a emphasis on the development of multiculturalism in Europe.[2] The first exhibition organized was by Brazilian artists Cildo Meireles and Tunga.[citation needed] Among other artists the foundation has also organized exhibitions of Kawamata, Victor Grippo, Gabriel Orozco, Anna Maria Maiolino, Cecilia Vicuna, Ilya Kabakov, James Casebere, Tony Oursler, Mona Hatoum, Ann Veronica Janssens, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, Nancy Spero, and Martha Rosler.[citation needed] Catherine de Zegher was the director of the foundation from 1987 until its closing in 1998.
