KMXN (92.9 FM) is a radio station that broadcasts in a country music format. The radio station is licensed to Osage City, Kansas, and the station serves the Topeka and Lawrence areas. The station is currently owned by Great Plains Media and broadcasts in HD Radio.
History
KMXN began airing in 1981 as KZOC ("KZ-93"), a country station serving Emporia, Kansas. By the mid-1990s, the station was known as KANS, and the format was satellite-fed oldies. The station's transmitter was located near Reading.
After an ownership change to 3 Point Communications in 2003, the station began targeting Topeka, and switched to Rhythmic CHR as "Wild 92.9" on August 11, after stunting with a loop of Tone-Loc's "Wild Thing." The call letters were changed to KKYD on August 18, 2003. KKYD carried the Portland, Oregon-based "The Playhouse" for morning drive, and was also the home for "Pocos Pero Locos", a syndicated hispanic urban show airing during weekends. The station's ratings with the format were very well.
Viking Communications (later to be known as Great Plains Media), owners of KLZR, bought the station in May 2005. On July 20, 2005, after stunting for two days with novelty music, the station flipped to adult hits as "92.9 Max FM" (in which they received the KMXN call letters on August 4, 2005). The station's transmitter was relocated to near Overbrook during this time.
Due to poor ratings with "Max", the station flipped to classic rock as "X 92.9" on February 1, 2006, and again to active rock in January 2007 while keeping the "X 92.9" moniker. The station began progressively targeting Lawrence with the flip to active rock. The station carried the Indianapolis-based "The Bob & Tom Show" for morning drive from 2006 until early 2009, when the station picked up "The Free Beer and Hot Wings Show", which is based in Grand Rapids, Michigan at WGRD.
On October 6, 2009, the station began stunting with TV show theme songs. One day later, the station flipped to country as "92-9 The Bull." The station competes with three Topeka country stations (KTOP-FM, WIBW-FM, and KTPK), and three Kansas City country stations (KFKF, KBEQ, and WDAF-FM).
