KDSJ 980 AM is a radio station offering a full service format of music, news, weather and sports. Licensed to Deadwood, S.D., the station serves the Northern Black Hills area (about 45,000 people). The station is currently owned by Pace Maier along with his parents, Loren and Renee as well as Scott Jensen through licensee 4 Paws Broadcasting, LLC. The four of them became just the third owners since 1947. Eli and Harry Daniels started KDSJ in 1947, then Al and Jeanne Decker took over in 1982 before selling in 2019.
The station has had several studio locations since its debut in 1947. In 1952, the station moved to it's present location, a former funeral home, at 745 Main Street in Deadwood. Its two tower transmitter site is east of town, off Highway 14A. They broadcast with 5,000 watts during the day and 1,000 watts at night.
The station’s music mix is advertised as oldies but includes music from the 1950’s to present.
