Junicode (a portmanteau of Junius and Unicode) is a free Unicode typeface for medievalists, designed by Peter S. Baker of University of Virginia. The most recent revision is 0.6.17, released on 12 July 2009[1].
It is very similar in style to typefaces of the 18th century such as Caslon. The roman characters are based on a typeface used by the Clarendon Press in the 17th century, and the Greek characters are based on Greek Double Pica from the 18th century. Junicode includes characters used in European medieval texts, in the Unicode ranges:
- Basic Latin (ASCII) (0000–007F)
- Latin 1 Supplement (00A0–00FF)
- Latin Extended A (0100–017F)
- Latin Extended B (0180–024F)
- IPA Extensions (0250–02AF)
- Spacing Modifier Letters (02B0–02FF)
- Combining Diacritical Marks (0300–036F)
- Greek (0370–03FF)
- Runic (16A0–16FF)
- Phonetic Extensions (1D00–1D6F)
- Latin Extended Additional (1E00–1EFF)
- General Punctuation (2000–206F)
- Superscripts and Subscripts (2070–209F)
- Currency Symbols (20A0–20CF)
- Letterlike Symbols (2100–214F)
- Mathematical operators (2200–22FF)
- Miscellaneous Technical (2300–23FF)
- Enclosed Alphanumerics (2460–24FF)
- Geometric Shapes (25A0–25FF)
- Dingbats (2700–27BF)
- Private Use Area (F100–F1A6)
Junicode supports part of the Medieval Unicode Font Initiative and is available in Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic.
