On 3 June 2017, starting at around 22:08 BST, a "series of co-ordinated terror attacks"[3] occurred in central London in the United Kingdom. At 23:46 BST, the Metropolitan Police told people in affected areas to "run and hide" and "barricade yourself in".[5] Police at the London Bridge cordon say there is more than one fatality.[6]
At 00:25 on 4 June, the Metropolitan Police announced they regarded the London Bridge and Borough Market attacks as "terrorist incidents."[7]
Attacks
London Bridge
At around 22:08 BST, a white van travelling north to south across London Bridge mounted the pavement and hit a number of pedestrians.[8][9] Police began evacuating all buildings within the vicinity of the bridge.[4] At least two fatalities were reported.[3]
London Bridge was closed to traffic, as was nearby Southwark Bridge.[9] London Bridge station was also closed at the request of the police.[8] Waterloo East, Charing Cross and Cannon Street stations were also closed.[10] Police at the cordon confirmed that there had been fatalities.[6] The Metropolitan Police dispatched boats on to the River Thames as a result of the incident, along with assistance from the RNLI, to contribute to the evacuation of the area.[11]
Borough Market
Four people were stabbed by three attackers in the Borough Bistro pub,[6] which is located in the Borough Market at the southern end of London Bridge. The attack occurred shortly after the incident on the bridge.[12]
At 23:43 BST, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers had responded to reports of stabbings and that "shots had been fired" in the market.[13]
Aftermath
The Metropolitan Police asked the public to remain calm and vigilant.[14] Previously a stabbing incident in Vauxhall was reported to have been related and Bank and Vauxhall stations stations were briefly closed, but were then reopened.[15] It was later confirmed to be unrelated to the other two incidents.[16]
An emergency COBRA meeting will be held on the morning of 4 June.[6] The incidents at London Bridge and Borough Market have been declared to be terrorist attacks.[2]
Previously a stabbing incident in Vauxhall was reported to have been related. Bank and Vauxhall stations stations were briefly closed, but were later reopened.[17] It was later confirmed to be unrelated to the other two incidents.[2]
Reactions
Domestic
Prime Minister Theresa May returned to Downing Street from campaigning for the general election.[18] May later said: "Following updates from police and security officials, I can confirm that the terrible incident in London is being treated as a potential act of terrorism."[6][8][17]
Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Corbyn and Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron wrote on Twitter that their thoughts were with those affected and expressed thanks to the emergency services.[19][20]
International
In response to the incident, US President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter in relation to his travel ban executive order: "We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!"[21][22][23] He further wrote that the United States would do whatever it can to help out in London and the UK.[24][25][26] CNN documented that his national security team had briefed him on the incidents.[22] Vice President Mike Pence also wrote of his condolences.[27]
