Jonathan (Jonnie) Goodwin, 40, is the founding partner of Lepe Partners, an international merchant bank focused on the media, internet and technology sector. Along with internet entrepreneur and investor, Brent Hoberman, he also co-created Founders Forum - an organisation that brings together the best global entrepreneurs, select inspiring CEOs and key investors across media and technology. Founders Forum networking events take place annually in London, New York, Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro.
Goodwin has advised on more than 100 media deals over the last 10 years worth over $20billion. They include Chris Evans' purchase of Virgin Radio, the sale of Friends Reunited to ITV, the sale of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and more recently the merger of property websites findaproperty.com, primelocation.com and zoopla.com. Lepe also advised on the £50m purchase of Daily Mail and General Trust’s 80 plus regional papers by Local World.
Early life
Born and raised on the Isle of Wight, Goodwin attended Charterhouse School in Surrey and studied Geography at the University of Nottingham.
Career
As a graduate, Goodwin worked briefly at Coopers and Lybrand before joining Apax Partners. In 1997, he was appointed as Managing Director of Talk Radio, which went on to become the foundation for The Wireless Group PLC where Jonathan was Group Managing Director. In 2000 he set up a corporate finance boutique, LongAcre Partners with Julian Culhane, the former Finance Director of atLastMinute.com and it grew into Europe's leading mid-market media corporate finance house. LongAcre was sold to Jefferies in 2007 but Goodwin remained as a Senior Advisor to Jefferies International.
In 2006, Goodwin also created the Founders Forum, along with Brent Hoberman. Now in its eighth year, the Founders Forum is the premier entrepreneur's event held in London, New York, Brazil, and India. In 2009, Jonathan also co-founded PROfounders Capital, an early stage fund backed by entrepreneurs for digital entrepreneurs.
Goodwin founded Lepe Partners in 2011, a merchant bank created to help entrepreneurs and CEOs in the media, internet and technology sectors grow their businesses. Goodwin says of Lepe: “We’re independent, and we’re relationship and sector driven. And we invest with minority stakes in a merchant bank-type way – we want to go on journeys with clients over many years.” (1) Goodwin is also on the advisory board of Opera Solutions.
Personal life
Goodwin is married with four children and lives in London and Hampshire, near Lepe Beach - which was one of the launch points for the D-Day landings.
Hobbies
Goodwin is passionate about sailing, and in 2012 campaigned the J/109, Harlequin, becoming the overall winner at Cowes Week 2012 for both the White Group, J/109 group, and Cowes Week overall.
