Johan van Beethoven (1740-1792) was Ludwig van Beethoven's father. Born 14th November 1740, Johan was a descendant of a Flemish/Dutch family of musicians and instrument makers from former Brabant (presumably the Mechelen-Leuven area), he was the son of Lodewijk van Beethoven (born in Mechelen, 1714, deceased in Bonn, 1773), Kapellmeister at the Electoral court at Bonn, and Maria Josepha Pall (married 1733). Ludwig van Beethoven is named after said Lodewijk van Beethoven.
Johan married Magdalena Keverich van Beethoven (1744–1787) of Croatian ancestry[citation needed]. He worked as a musician in the Electoral court at Bonn. Johan was an alcoholic and Ludwig had to support the family at a young age. Johan realized Ludwig's talent and became his first teacher. Because of Johan's alcohol problem, he would pull Beethoven out of bed late at night and order him to play the piano and or violin for his friends. It is said that Johan was a violent father when it came to Beethoven's music. Whenever Beethoven would play poorly, Johan would exclaim that it was an embarrassment to the family.
