Jaswal is both Rajput and Jat[1] clan found in India. Jaswal is reported as an offshoot of the Katoch, the great Jat clan which gave rulers to the kingdom of Trigarta. It derives its name from (or possibly gives its name to) the Jaswan Dun of Hoshiarpur, and at its original seat, Bhir Jaswan, are remains of buildings, wells and fountains which attest its former power. It still ranks high, being of Jaikaria status. In 1596 the Jasuwalas were described as ' Zamindars with an army ' and gave some trouble to the imperial authorities.[2][3]
Genealogy of Rajput clan
The Jaswal Rajputs are a branch of the Katoch clan of Kangra. Their ancestor Raja Purab Chand was a brother of the Raja of Kangra, who carved out an independent kingdom in the Swaan valley, which came to be known as Jaswan.[4]
The present head of the clan is Raja Naginder Singh, son of Raja Chain Singh Jaswal (since 1945) who lives in his ancestral palace at Amb (Una District).[5]
