James Wright Foley (October 18, 1973 – c. August 19, 2014) was an American freelance photojournalist. He worked for the U.S. GlobalPost news company, until November 22, 2012, when he was abducted in northwestern Syria. In August 2014, he was decapitated in a filmed execution by the authority of the ISIS.[3][4][5][6] Foley is the first American citizen to be formally executed under the ISIS establishment.[7]
Early life
Foley was a native of Rochester, New Hampshire.[6] He graduated from the Catholic Marquette University in 1996[8] and was a Catholic.[9][10] He later graduated from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in 2008.[5] He was also a 2003 graduate of the MFA Program for Poets & Writers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2003.[11]
Career
Foley began his career as a teacher in Arizona, Massachusetts and Chicago and moved to a career in photojournalism in the mid-2000s.[12]
In April 2011, Foley, working for GlobalPost, and three other journalists were detained near Brega, Libya, by forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi during the Libyan Civil War; fellow photojournalist Anton Hammerl was killed in the attack in which Foley was captured.[13][14] Foley was released from jail 44 days later.[14] Foley continued working for GlobalPost until his capture in Syria in 2012, as well as other media outlets which included the French agency Agence France-Presse.[15]
Kidnapping and death
Foley was kidnapped in northwestern Syria along with his translator in November 2012. The translator was later released.[16]
Sources close to the family and the White House said that he was kidnapped by Shabiha militia, and later reportedly held in an Syrian Arab Air Force intelligence complex in Damascus.[17][18] A US Special Forces operation to rescue Foley (and other hostages) was initiated by President Obama in July, 2014, somewhere inside Syria.[19] A firefight ensued in which a number of militants were killed, but Foley was never located. The operation was a secret but was revealed after Foley's death, confirming for the first time that US troops have operated on the ground inside Syria during the civil war.[19]
Foley's continued whereabouts were unknown until August 19, 2014, when ISIS posted a video to YouTube depicting Foley reading a prepared statement urging Americans to stop their support for the U.S. government for its bombing campaign against ISIS targets.[20] The video then shows his beheading as well as revealing that ISIS is holding another American journalist named Steven Joel Sotloff and will kill him unless U.S. President Barack Obama halts airstrikes against them.[5] The video was shot at an unknown desert location. The killer spoke with a British accent and authorities are attempting to identify him.[21][22]
On August 20, 2014, the United States National Security Council confirmed the video was authentic.[23] On August 19, 2014, the day before, Foley's family had confirmed his death.[24][25]
Diane Foley, James' mother, said he "gave his life trying to expose the world to the suffering of the Syrian people".[24]
