The Inter University Consortium for the Promotion of Social Sciences Arts and Humanities (IUCPSS), Pakistan was established on 23 January 2012 in Bahawalpur, Pakistan. The areas of cooperation under the consortium initially envisaged were faculty development/faculty exchange and appointment of scholars as adjunct faculty members on reciprocal basis among the participating institutions, exchange of students & scholars, organizing/initiating joint research projects (each university would work in its respective geographical area), linkages with other national & international organizations, joint seminars/conferences & workshops and other academic/co-curricular activities, sharing of facilities/expertise among the consortium members, diploma/certificate Courses on civic/human rights education and other important issues and programs of mutual interest. It was also agreed that with the consent of participating institutions new avenues of collaborative activities will also be explored.

This first ever educational consortium in Pakistan started its journey with eight dedicated founding members. Initial deliberations followed by a joint commitments to work collaboratively were held in Bahawalpur, Pakistan. Professor Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar Vice Chancellor the Islamia University of Bahawalpur at that time was honored as founding chairperson of this consortium and Mr. Murtaza Noor as coordinator. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony was witnessed by Professor Dr. Sohail H Naqvi, Executive Director of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, Professor Dr. Nasser Ali Khan, civil society, media, intellectuals, educationists and people from all walk of life. Vice Chancellors and their representatives from public sector universities of Pakistan including Professor Dr. Masoom Yasinzai, from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Professor Dr. Nizamuddin from the University of Gujrat, Gujrat, Vice Chancellor representative from the Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, Sindh, Professor Dr. Zakir Hussain from the Government College University, Faisalabad, Professor Dr. Rasool Bakhsh Raisani from the University of Baluchistan, Quetta, Professor Dr. Muhammad Mohsin Khan from the Institute of Management Sciences, Peshawar, Professor Dr. Khawaja Alqama, from the Bahauddin Zakriya University, Multan and the Islamia University of Bahawalpur are the signatories of this consortium.
This consortium has been gaining strength day by day since its establishment. The membership of consortium has significantly increased and currently over twenty university from all across Pakistan are members of this consortium and they keep holding social, cultural and collaborative events under the umbrealla of Inter University Consortium for the Promotion of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. This consortium got its major strength by establishing collaboration with the American Institute of Pakistan Studies (AIPS).
