Revision as of 21:27, 4 September 2011
Hand summary obfuscation (HSO) is used in competitive electronic web based card games of skill to provided an extra layer of security to prevent opponent players from the status of a live hand. HSO is implemented by an unbiased 3rd party to maintain the status of live hands. This status includes player's cards, order of the remaining card deck and so on. HSO came about when Internet based electronic poker sites were discovered to be participating in fraudulent activity.
This fraudulent activity shook the on-line poker world when Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker allowed certain players information about poker hands giving them an unfair advantage over other players. The fraudulent activity exposed a weakness when an on-line poker site needs to maintain hand information during the course of play. This hand information was provided to certain players, allowing those players to steal money from other players. HSO prevents this since the technique of using an unbiased 3rd party to maintain the data, along with down card concealment (DCC) prevent any one entity from associating hand information and either using that information to gain an unfair advantage or providing that information to another player so that player also gains an unfair advantage over his/her competitors.
