Hanayo (花代, Nakajima Hanayo, born March 29, 1976 in Tokyo) is a Japanese musician, photographer, and artist. She is known for her playful and subversive artwork, often deeply rooted in Japanese culture.
Background
Born in America, the daughter of a NASA scientist, and came to Japan in her late teens to train as a geisha, publishing an account of the experience in her 1991 book, "Oshakuchan No. 1."
She got a Sorbonne scholarship, and went truant at the ne plus ultra of French academia. Hanayo then became an au pair, but out of boredom made a point of stealing from her Parisian employers. She was caught and deported, ended up in Tokyo where she hosted the television show "Chounenten Museum."
No stranger to controversy, she on record saying the duty of a woman is to be a companion to a man.
Career
Hanayo first made headlines in Japan as the only junior geisha to train there for over 30 years. She was featured on the cover of the now defunct The Face magazine in full geisha attire.
Her career in the west is most noted for her musical output, her hit single Joe Le Taxi has been featured on many compilations, including the infamous 2 Many DJs on Soulwax. She has been involved with musicians and bands such as Violent Onsen Geisha, Red Crayola, Vapid Dolly, Pain Cake (with Locust Fudge) and most recently Wooden Veil.
Hanayo has also had her photography published and exhibited worldwide. Her work in the field is known for its blurry, ethereal quality. Her main subject is her daughter, Tenko.
Hanayo has also performed theater, starred in a Shane O'Sullivan film, and modeled for a Jean Paul Gaultier advertising campaign. She admires the writing of Yukio Mishima, whom she has referred to as her "only real teacher."
Hanayo currenly lives in Berlin, working with matanicola as the music, art, and performance group Ponpons.
