Hameldon Community College is a mixed 11-16 comprehensive school in Burnley, Lancashire, with specialist status in Business & Enterprise and Science.
History
The school opened in September 2006 as part of the first wave of a nationwide 10-15 year programme of capital investment funded by the Department for Education and Skills called Building Schools for the Future. It currently occupies the adjacent sites of the former Habergham High School and Ivy Bank Business and Enterprise College. After a lengthy period of dispute as to which of three possible sites should be chosen for the new buildings,[1] it was decided that the college's new site, scheduled for completion in 2010, will be on Melrose Avenue in South West Burnley. This will require a number of Calico housing association properties to be demolished and residents moved to newly-built properties in nearby Cog Lane, Smirthwaite Street and Southey Street.[2]
Curriculum
At Key Stage 3 students study English, Mathematics, Science, Information and Communication Technology, French, Art, Music, Design Technology, Geography, History, Physical Education, Religious Education and Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education. In Years 8 and 9 some students study an additional language.
At Key Stage 4 students study English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education, Religious Education and Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education, together with a range of optional subjects. Both GCSE and vocational qualifications are offered.
The student-run radio station, HFM, is one of only two school stations in the North West to belong to the Student Radio Association.
The school also has a student newspaper, the Hameldon Newsroom, run by students Tyrell McGowan and Lauren Cooper, which publishes regularly within the school and occasionally contributes to the local newspaper, the Burnley Express.
Controversy
Controversy has surrounded Hameldon since its opening in September 2006. By November it was decided that the school should have a police base on-site[3], "to provide a friendly and familiar face, easily accessible for anyone who wants to discuss policing-related issues." Headmistress Gill Broom said that the presence of a police base "increases the community dimension of the school, embraces engagement and partnership working and further develops the multi-agency practices which the school is working towards."
The institution was put into "Special Measures" by OFSTED after an inspection in February 2007 in which it was placed in the lowest category (Grade 4).[4][5] Many students, parents and teaching staff have subsequently expressed frustration with Headmistress Gill Broom's approach of blaming OFSTED's timing for the school's report.[6] Several pupils were excluded from the college in the same month following a series of well-publicised 'happy slapping' attacks within the school' classrooms and grounds,[7][8] and there have been many anecdotes about poor behaviour and timekeeping in the local press. The school is currently undersubscribed for the 2007-2008 academic year.[9]
In March 2007 the former headmaster of Ivy Bank Business and Enterprise College, Mr Stephen Ball, spoke of his sadness at the situation which has developed at Hameldon[10].
In an effort to improve the school's performance a troubleshooter was drafted in by County Hall in August 2007[11].
An incident on Friday, December 14 2007 again brought the emergency services to the school. Though the Headmistress has so far made no public statement, it can be gathered that youths who left the school last year returned in a bid to do harm to current pupils[12][13] [14].
