The initial reaction was a bit low as the movie touched on many many sensitive issues. It is also rumoured that the underworld had a say in the banning of the film because of the film's ability to depict to a scarily true level the extent of the human side of warlords. But a week later the crowds flocked to the halls and the movie became a house full. However the actual earnings of this movie were kept a secret. The movie is still running in numerous halls across India. |

The dialogues of the movie have also become very popular, owing to their poetic flow. Almost all the major characters have their own introductory lines, some of which have passed on into popular culture - the best known probably being "Mera naam hai Bulla, rakhta hoon khulla".
The movie has acquired a large following and a cult status - possibly because of the poetic dialogue, superb action sequences and strong storyline.
Plot Synopsis
A Gang war erupts between two war lords. Bulla and Lambu Aatta. Bulla emerges victorious but only after losing his sister to it. Bulla then takes a contract from a politician to kill a rival politician. He then sends his right hand man Kala Shetty to kill him. Kala Shetty kills the rival politician but is caught in the process by Shankar (Mithun). Shankar lives in spacious hut with his father Ram Singh, younger sister Geeta and pet monkey Tinku. Bulla promises revenge on Shankar by killing all his family members slowly but surely.
Shankar has two jobs, one as a coolie in a ship yard and the other as a coolie of an airport(!) The shipyard and the airport are quite nearby and hence Shankar can easily work at the two places. Shankar's love interest is Ganga but before marrying her, Shankar is worried about his unmarried sister Geeta.
Meanwhile, Bulla's eunuch brother Chutiya is jealous because he is not able to get girls but his brother is having a girl, Hasina. He is taking out the sweat of the beauty (Hasina ke pasina). He then asks Gulshan, a friend of Lucky Chikna, to get a girl for him. Gulshan quietly impresses Geeta and marries her off. After marring her, he takes her to Chutiya who rapes her and in the process kills her. When he goes to dispose of the body then Shankar's monkey sees him doing that and informs Shankar of the misdeed. Shanker arrives hurriedly to the scene with his monkey. There he finds Chutiya. Chase sequence begins which ends at the door steps of Bulla. Here Bulla and his friends namely Ibu Hatela (who is the progeny of a female ghost and the devil's disciple), Pote (who is not even of his father), inspector and his body guard confront him. There they tell Shanker that they plan to kill all his family member and play with him. Shanker tells them that they all will be killed by him in 10 days time.
In the mean while Shankar's dad goes mad and threatens to kill his boss who is the inspector of the police station, the inspector being more young and powerful kills his dad. This enrages Shankar and goes face to face with Bulla and utters the legendary words "do..char..cheh..aath..dus..BAS!!".He starts killing Bulla's accomplices one by one. First to go is Lucky Chikna, then Gulshan is killed. Shankar emphasizes that people like them destroy women's life and leave them as prostitutes. After killing them, Shankar moves to Ibu Hatela's house where he is trying to force an innocent girl for sex. Shankar kills him and moves along to kill Pote. In the mean time, Chutia and Bulla kill Shankar's love interest, Ganga
After killing Inspector Kale and Chutiya, Shanker calls up Bulla and tells him that he has killed all of his gang member except him. Bulla calls him for a show down and meets him in an epic battle near the sea yard cum airport. Bulla tries to use Shankar's daughter as a leverage but soon realises that this was his daughter(thus calling her "hasina ka paseena"). In spite of that Bulla tries to use his own daughter as a leverage against Shankar. Shankar rescues Bulla's daughter with the help of his monkey and then kills Bulla.

Opening Scene
The opening scene is one of the many memorable episodes in the film. This scene sets the stage for the entire epic. The opening scene takes place at an aerodrome. Kafanchor Neta arrives in his chopper and at the other side Lambu Atta comes in his car. The dialogue delivery between the two characters Kafanchor and Lambu Aatta is increasingly being considered as one of the most vitriolic and heartfelt dialogues from a Mithun film.
A few gems from the scene are given below
Lambu Aatta: Arre woh to tera khasam khaas tha, teri biwi uske paas aur uski biwi tere paas soti thi, phir bhi dono me koi lafda nahin hota tha!!
Kafanchor Neta: arre bada lafda ho gaya hai. usne humri supari bulla ko di hai.
Lambu Aatta: bulla ka naam lekar tune meri khopadi hila diya hai, khada kar diya hai mera, gusse se ek ek baal khada kar diya. saale ko Maine dhood pila pila kar pala, lekin aaj woh meri chhati chabana chahta hai, meri chhati!!
Reactions
This movie raised many sensitive and important topics like
1. Politician-criminal-police nexus - Although not an uncommon topic in movies at that time, it was more realistic and brutal in GUNDA. It wasn’t an idealistic story of the bad guys being arrested by the good cop in the end. It was this movie that spawned the encounter specialist movies that we were flooded in at the start of the 2000s. The moral here was “death is eternal”.
2. Homosexuality- Chutiya’s advances on chikna Gulshan and the desire to eat Ibu’s kela obviously showed his attraction for men. The moral was “being gay is okay as long as the people around you are okay with it”. .
3. Safe Sex- This was probably the most unsubtle (in a good way of course) topic of the movie. India was just coming to terms with AIDS and this movie paved the way for the government to start its anti-AIDS campaign and soliciting the use of condoms. Various references in GUNDA include rape with clothes on, tearing of only the top of the woman’s clothes (so as to prevent fluid exchange). Even in Lucky Chikna’s hanging garden a sex worker refuses to have sex without a condom. There was introduced the legendary jersey number 89 “Nirodh Kumar”. Such a fine way of teaching safe sex.
4. Vulnerability of gang lords- Although not really a topic with a moral, it inspired future filmmakers to show their lead negative character as a human being rather than a laughing gun happy caricature. This movie showed that even the baddest of people have feelings of love towards family. I refer to the two immortal scenes the “mere pyare chikne kundan” and the “munni meri behen munni X2” scenes that show the biggest criminals shedding tears for their loved ones. This was cinematic creativity at its best at that time which inspired movies like ‘Company”, “Satya”, “Vaastav” to show that even criminals have hearts.
5. Gandhism - Although Shankar takes revenge against Bulla and the rest of his cronies, He loses all he has in bargain, thus sending you a message that violence helps no one. An alternate method used by Shankar could have been that of a witness or as a police informer directly reporting to his father or the commissioner who asks him to join the police force. This would have been a comparatively slower process but definitely the more beneficial one in the long run. Movie classics like “Lage Raho Munnabhai” was part inspired by GUNDA. It was an exact anti thesis of GUNDA where a violent person becomes peaceful whereas GUNDA a peaceful coolie becomes a killing machine. The parallels are too many to be a coincidence.
Dialogues

Mithun da: Dada baap ke baap ko kehate hai. Aisa baap jo apni harami aulado ko marne ke liye unko di huyi tarikho ka intezar karta hai.
Potey: Un tarikho ke ane se phele mai thumari zindagi ka calender phad dunga.
Bulla: Teri tarikhen ayengi shankar, magar tere marne ke baad.
Mithun da: Bulla ye crane dekh raha hai, iski halat wahi hai jo is waqt teri hai, jab iski chain toot jati hai toh ye bekar ho jati hai, aur bekar chesen bangar mai fek di jati hai.
Bulla: Mai karane(crane) nahi hu shankar, jahaz hu jahaz, jo samundar ka bhi seena faad deta haiii.
