The Group of Six Artistes (Grupa šestorice autora) was a collective artiste's group founded in 1975 by six Croatian artistes - Mladen and Sven Stilinović, Fedor Vučemilović, Boris Demur, Vlado Martek and Željko Jerman in Zagreb, Croatia.[1] The group was influenced by their predecessors, the Gorgona Group.[2]
They performed their pieces, naming them 'exhibition-actions', in open air spaces using objects such as sun loungers and urban projections. Their objective was to question the restrictions set on art by the Art Institutions, most likely as their spontaneous, collective reaction to the circumstances in Croatia at that time.
Their pieces were exhibited in public spaces in Croatia as well as abroad, including the municipal bathing place on the Sava River, in the centre of the Upper Town Zagreb, at Sopot in New Zagreb, on the main square in Zagreb (1975), on the beach in Mošćenička Draga (1976), in Venice (1978) and Belgrade (1976 -1978).[3][4] Between 1975 and 1979, they performed and documented over 20 art pieces.[5]
In addition to their exhibition-actions, The Group of Six Artistes launched a magazine MAJ/75 (self-published), printed in the studio of Vlasta Delimar and Željko Jerman. Eighteen issues of MAJ/75 were printed between 1978 and 1984, and the publication became an additional alternative exhibition space, not only for the Group of Six Artistes but other Eastern European creatives as well, presenting artistes such as Vlasta Delimar, Tomislav Gotovac, Sanja Iveković, Mangelos, Balint Szombathy, Raša Todosijević and Goran Trbuljak in its six year run.[6]
