Encanto is a 2021 American computer-animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.[4][5] The 60th film produced by the studio, it is directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, co-directed by Charise Castro Smith, and produced by Clark Spencer and Yvett Merino, with songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film stars the voices of Stephanie Beatriz, John Leguizamo, María Cecilia Botero, Diane Guerrero, Jessica Darrow, Angie Cepeda, and Wilmer Valderrama. Set in a fantasy version of Colombia, it tells the story of Mirabel Madrigal, a young Colombian woman dealing with the frustration of being the only member of her family without magical powers, who must go on a journey to save her family and their house when their magic is in danger of disappearing.
Encanto premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 3, 2021, and is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on November 24, 2021 in 2D, RealD 3D, and Dolby Cinema formats. The film received positive reviews from critics.

Production
Development
In November 2016, Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed that John Lasseter, the then-chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, had presented an idea for an animated project to himself and Byron Howard, while promoting his previous collaboration with the studio, 2016's Moana.[15] Miranda said work on the project had begun but was at an early stage.[15]
On January 29, 2020, it was reported the studios were developing an animated film centered on a Latino family. Howard and Jared Bush were announced as the film's directors, with Bush being involved with the film's screenplay, while Clark Spencer and Yvett Merino were named as the film's producers.[16]
On June 18, 2020, the tentative title was revealed to be Encanto. The project was also confirmed to be the film Miranda was involved in, and it was reported to be about a girl in a magical family. While initial reports had said the film would be set in Brazil, Miranda stated on June 22 that it would actually be set in Colombia.[17] The same day, it was also reported that Charise Castro Smith would be a co-director in addition to co-writing the screenplay.[17]
On December 10, 2020, the project was officially confirmed at a Disney Investor Day meeting, where a clip was shown, a release in fall of 2021 announced, and magical realism referenced.[18]
Music
By June 2020, Miranda had begun writing the film's music, which will have eight original songs in both Spanish and English.[17] On September 8, 2021, Germaine Franco, co-composer of the songs from Coco, began to score the film.[19][20][8]
Marketing
By October 3, 2021, Jakks Pacific announced that the new line of toys for the film released. The line of toys coming to retailer stores, featuring interactive playsets including the Magical Casa Madrigal, Singing Mirabel and Magic Butterfly doll, Sing and Play Mirabel doll, Mirabel and Isabela fashion doll assortment, Mirabel's Musical Accordion, 7-inch key character plush assortment and character role play dresses. Additional JAKKS products for the film will be featured in future waves coming in 2022.[21]
The merchandise, including the new movie tie-in books and T-shirts, was also available from popular retailer stores. The collections will include Capybara Pillow Pet, Personalized Headboard Wall Decals, and Picnic Time Baskets, Coolers, Blanket, and Cutting Board.[22] The new Funko Pop! figures of several characters from the film are available for pre-order on Entertainment Earth and will start shipping in January 2022.[23]
Release
Encanto held its world premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 3, 2021,[24] and is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on November 24, 2021 in RealD 3D and Dolby 3D.[25][26][27] The film will have an exclusive 30-day theatrical run, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.[28] Encanto will be released on Disney+ on December 24, 2021.[29]
Reception
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 92% approval rating with an average rating of 7.60/10, based on 36 reviews. The site's critical consensus reads, "Encanto's setting and cultural perspective are new for Disney, but the end result is the same -- enchanting, beautifully animated fun for the whole family."[30] Metacritic reports a score of 72 out of 100 based on 19 critic reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[31]
