What You Hear is What You See is an album by bassist Bakithi Kumalo.[2][3][4]
Bakithi was inspired to create the album while touring around the world as a musician with artists such as Paul Simon. He met people who reminded him of being a homeless youth in his native South Africa, and he identified with their situations.[5][6] Kumalo explained, "They would tell me their stories, and I would take those stories back to the hotel, and I would start to create pieces thinking about these people. As I'm creating, I find out that their situation is the same as my situation."[7]
