Howard Tangye (b.1948) is an Australian Postwar & Contemporary artist.[1][2][3][4] He grew up in Mount Isa
Howard started his career as an artist when he moved to London from Australia, at age 18 to study at the Saint Martins School of Art in London[1][5] then continued to Parsons in New York.[1] His former students include John Galliano, Stella McCartney, Christopher Kane, Wes Gordon and Tony Green[6] when he was a fashion illustrator tutor at and head of womenswear design at Central Saint Martins.[1][7][3][8][9][10]. John Galliano told Vogue, 'Howard who was really, kind of built me up, to become a fashion illustrator."[8]
In 2020, Howard Tangye paintings were exhibited at The Armoury Show (art fair), Whitewall Magazine said of Tangye's exhibition[11]:
"Tucked away in Pier 90, we were captivated by Howard Tangye’s whimsical paintings presented by London-based State. Employing only the naked line and pale shocks of color, Tangye’s portraits are a study of the body at rest. Each painting’s sketchy, elusive form emits a quiet yet unmistakably sensual energy. They exist at a moment of hesitation that, like holding your breath, makes it feel easy to lose yourself."[11]
In 2017, Tangye held an exhibition titled 'LINKS' at The Amar Gallery in London.[5][3][12] In 2022, his work was exhibited and he did a talk at the Design Museum, London for their 'Drawing Fashion' collection.[13]
