Avengers: Infinity War is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the Avengers, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is intended to be the sequel to 2012's Marvel's The Avengers and 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron and the nineteenth film installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, with a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, and features an ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston and Josh Brolin.
The film was announced in October 2014 as Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 and in April 2015, the Russo brothers were onboard to direct; Markus and McFeely signed on to the film in May 2015. In July 2016, Marvel revealed the title would be shortened to simply Avengers: Infinity War. Filming is expected to begin in November 2016 in Atlanta along with an untitled sequel.
Avengers: Infinity War is scheduled to be released on May 4, 2018. A direct sequel is scheduled to be released on May 3, 2019.
Cast
- The leader and benefactor of the Avengers who is a self-described genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist with electromechanical suits of armor of his own making.[1][2]
- The leader of a faction of Avengers and a World War II veteran, who was enhanced to the peak of human physicality by an experimental serum and frozen in suspended animation before waking up in the modern world.[3] The Russo brothers hinted that Rogers is no longer Captain America explaining, "I think him dropping that shield [at the end of Captain America: Civil War] is him letting go of that identity" and "admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making."[4]
- Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner / Hulk: An Avenger and a genius scientist who, because of exposure to gamma radiation, transforms into a monster when enraged or agitated.[5][6]
- Chris Hemsworth as Thor:
- An Avenger and the crown prince of Asgard, based on the Norse mythological deity of the same name.[3] Joe Russo stated that Thor's storyline picks up after the events of Thor: Ragnarok, which finds him in a "very profound... very interesting place" and gives him "a real emotional motivation after that."[7]
- Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch: An Avenger who can harness magic and engage in hypnosis and telekinesis.[8]
- Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier: An enhanced assassin and Rogers' best friend, who reemerged brainwashed after being thought killed in action during World War II.[9]
- Chris Pratt as Peter Quill / Star-Lord:
- The half human, half alien leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy who was abducted from Earth as a child and raised by a group of alien thieves and smugglers called the Ravagers.[8]
- Zoe Saldana as Gamora:
- A member of the Guardians who is an orphan from an alien world who seeks redemption for her past crimes. She was trained by Thanos to be his personal assassin.[10]
- A member of the Guardians and warrior in search of vengeance against Thanos for killing his family.[10]
- Vin Diesel as Groot:
- A member of the Guardians who is a tree-like humanoid and the accomplice of Rocket.[10]
- Bradley Cooper as Rocket:
- A member of the Guardians who is a genetically engineered raccoon-like bounty hunter and mercenary, and is a master of weapons and battle tactics.[10]
- Karen Gillan as Nebula:
- An adopted daughter of Thanos who was raised with Gamora as siblings, and a member of the Guardians.
- Tom Hiddleston as Loki: Thor's adoptive brother and nemesis based on the deity of the same name.[11]
- Josh Brolin as Thanos:
- A powerful being who longs to collect all the Infinity Stones.[12][13][14] In addition to providing the voice for the character, Brolin performed motion capture on set.[15] On choosing to portray Thanos, Brolin said that his "good friend" Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito "called me up and started talking about this thing. It was nice because I could intimately talk to him about it. What I liked. What I didn't like about the whole idea of it… It was really exciting because of the possibilities that it could become. Not as an idea or as a blockbuster, but just as something different. It's a character mentality."[16] Brolin was looking to explore the humanity of the character, saying there are "parts of him that are unfounded to me, which will be found."[17]
Production
In October 2014, Marvel announced a two-part sequel to Age of Ultron, titled Avengers: Infinity War. Part 1 is scheduled to be released on May 4, 2018, with Part 2 scheduled for May 3, 2019.[18][14] In April 2015, Marvel announced that Anthony and Joe Russo would direct both parts of Avengers: Infinity War,[19] with back-to-back filming expected to begin in 2016.[20] Also in the month, Kevin Feige said the films would be two, distinct films "because they [have] such shared elements, it felt appropriate... to [subtitle the films] like that. But I wouldn’t call it one story that's cut in half. I would say it's going to be two distinct movies."[21] In April 2015, Chris Evans stated that filming was expected begin in late 2016, with the plan of shooting both parts over nine months.[22] By May 2015, Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely signed on to write the screenplays for both parts of the film.[23] In January 2016, the Russo brothers revealed that filming would begin in November 2016, and take place in Atlanta, Georgia, with Trent Opaloch as director of photography. Filming is expected to last until June 2017.[24] The following May, the Russos revealed that they would be retitling the two films, to further remove the misconception that the films were one large film split in two, given they were originally revealed as Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2, with Joe stating, "The intention is we will change [the titles], we just haven’t come up with [them] yet."[25] In July 2016, Marvel revealed the film's title would be shortened to simply Avengers: Infinity War.[26]
Music
In June 2016, Alan Silvestri, who composed the score for The Avengers, was revealed to be returning to score both Infinity War and its sequel.[27]
