The 2023 Speed Chess Championship was an online blitz and bullet chess tournament organised by Chess.com.
Participants
11 players were invited to compete directly by Chess.com. The winner of the Junior Speed Chess Championship (Gukesh D) qualified for the event[1], and the remaining 4 spots were filled from two qualification events.[2][3]
Reigning World Chess Champion Ding Liren was originally one of the 11 invitees; however he withdrew and was replaced by Ian Nepomniachtchi.[4]
Format
The format was a single-elimination tournament, with the players seeded by their Chess.com ratings at the start of the event. Each match consisted of 90 minutes of games at a 5+1 time control, 60 minutes of 3+1 games and 30 minutes of 1+1. If the match was tied after the conclusion of the 1+1 segment, four 1+1 games were to be played, and if still tied the match was to be decided by a single armageddon game.[5]
