- Comment: Chess.com is not independent coverage. The Week in Chess looks to be a blog. FIDE is a useful source but notability requires multiple independent, reliable, in-depth sources. — Bilorv (talk) 20:05, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: All sources are Chess.com itself, which organized the event. Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 01:00, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
The 2023 Speed Chess Championship was an online blitz and bullet chess tournament organised by Chess.com. The winner of the event was Magnus Carlsen, who defeated Hikaru Nakamura in the final to end his run of 5 straight SCC wins.[1][2]
Participants
11 players were invited to compete directly by Chess.com. The winner of the Junior Speed Chess Championship (Gukesh D) qualified for the event[3], and the remaining 4 spots were filled from two qualification events.[4][5]
Reigning World Chess Champion Ding Liren was originally one of the 11 invitees; however he withdrew and was replaced by Ian Nepomniachtchi.[6]
Format
The format was a single-elimination tournament, with the players seeded by their Chess.com ratings at the start of the event. Each match consisted of 90 minutes of games at a 5+1 time control, 60 minutes of 3+1 games and 30 minutes of 1+1.[7] If the match was tied after the conclusion of the 1+1 segment, four 1+1 games were to be played, and if still tied the match was to be decided by a single armageddon game.[8]
Prize money
The total prize fund was $150,000 - $5,000 for each of the two qualifying tournaments, and $140,000 for the main bracket.[9]
