The annual Dominican Day Parade in New York City started in 1982 as a small celebration with concerts and cultural events in Washington Heights, organized by Dominican community leaders Miguel Guillermo Amaro and Sócrates Tejada. It has since grown to become a star-studded show with thousands of participants, held each August on Sixth Avenue, and is now one of New York City's largest ethnic parades. A lesser parade is held on the Grand Concourse in The Bronx.
