Song |
"Despacito" (English: "Slowly") is a single by Puerto Rican pop artist Luis Fonsi featuring reggaeton act Daddy Yankee from his upcoming studio album.[1] Both single and music video were released on 13 January 2017 under Universal Music Latin. The song was written by Luis Fonsi and Erika Ender and was produced by Andrés Torres and Mauricio Rengifo, best known as El Dandee from the pop duo Cali & El Dandee.[2] Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee previously collaborated on the 2010 song "Una Oportunidad".[3]
Lyrically, the song is about having a sexual relationship but performed in a smooth and romantic way. On Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart, the most important music chart for Spanish language Latin music in the United States, it debuted at No. 2 and became Fonsi's 30th career hit and Yankee's highest debut ever. Commercially, the song has proven to be successful, topping the Argentine, Chilean, Colombian, Ecuadorian, Italian, Guatemalan, Mexican, Panamanian, Paraguayan, Peruvian, Portuguese, Spanish, Uruguayan and US Billboard Hot Latin Songs music charts, while also reaching the top ten in Dominican Republic, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Switzerland, three US Billboard Latin charts and Venezuela.
It became the first Spanish-language song to reach the top ten on Spotify's Global chart and broke the record for most number-ones at the same time on Monitor Latino's charts (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Latin America, Mexico and Panama). Its music video broke five Vevo records for most views on the first day and the fastest Spanish-language music video to reach from 100 to 900 million views. According to Monitor Latino, "Despacito" was the song with most radio spins in Latin America in February and March 2017.
On 17 March 2017 two remixes were released: a solo pop version and a salsa version featuring Puerto Rican musician Victor Manuelle.
Background and release
Prior to collaborating on "Despacito", Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee had already worked together on "Una Oportunidad", released in 2010, planned to be included on the album Mundial, but it was later suppressed.[3] After two years without releasing new music,[4] Fonsi wanted to create "a fun track that had that Latin feel with a melody that I feel very comfortable singing and that will make people just dance" and wrote simple lyrics instead of metaphors. He showed the chorus to his friend Erika Ender, who won a Latin Grammy Award as songwriter in 2016,[5] and then they co-written the rest of the song, which was composed as a cumbia pop track but whose lyrics were written as a ballad. After deciding to add some urban influences, Fonsi contacted reggaeton act Daddy Yankee and presented him the demo. Luis Fonsi said that he does not consider it a reggaeton song but feels that it does have a reggaeton energy and an subtle urban beat. He also affirmed that Daddy Yankee's work was a plus to the song because "it needed that explosion that only he can bring to the table."[6]
"Despacito" was available for digital download on 13 January 2017, released under Universal Music Latin and after two weeks of its announce.[7] The single's success was influenced by a trend of fusioning Latin pop and urban music after Nicky Jam's "El Perdón", Thalia's "Desde Esa Noche", Enrique Iglesias' "Duele el Corazón", Carlos Vives' "La Bicicleta", Ricky Martin's "Vente Pa' Ca" and Shakira's "Chantaje". Fonsi considers that "the new pop".[4]
Composition
"Despacito" is a reggaeton-pop song[8][7] composed in 4/4 time with 88 beats per minute. Its implicit lyrics are about having a sexual relationship in a smooth and romantic way, describing the act of sex as "seeing her hair dancing", "undress her with kisses", "signing her labyrinth walls", "bypassing her danger zones", "provoking her screams" and "starting slowly and then savagely".
Reception
Commercial performance
In the United States, the single debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart, being his highest-charting single since June 2009,[8] when "Aquí Estoy Yo" peaked at the top position.[9] "Despacito" became also Fonsi's first No. 1 hit single on Billboard's Latin Digital Song Sales, with 11,000 downloads sold on the week ending on 19 January. As to Daddy Yankee, it was his highest debut ever on the Hot Latin Songs chart, in which he marked his 48th career hit. The single peaked at No. 52 on Billboard's Hot 100 on the issue dated March 18, 2017,[15] becoming Fonsi's highest peak on that chart and Yankee's third, following "Rompe" (peaked at No. 24 on April 16, 2006) and "Gasolina" (peaked at No. 32 on January 29, 2005).[16] "Despacito" was also the song with most radio spins in Latin America in February 2017, with 59,359 spins between the ten countries Monitor Latino measure.[17]

Music video
The music video was released alongside the single on 13 January 2017, surpassing 5.14 million views on its first 24 hours, breaking J Balvin's previous record with "Bobo" for a Spanish-language Vevo clip.[8] It was filmed in December 2016 in La Perla neighborhood and the popular bar La Factoría in San Juan, Puerto Rico and was directed by Carlos Perez.[2] The director had previously worked with Luis Fonsi on "Corazón en la Gaveta" (2014) and also with Daddy Yankee on "Gangsta Zone" (2006, performed with Snoop Dogg), "Descontrol" (2010), "Ven Conmigo" (2011, performed with Prince Royce) and "Moviendo Caderas" (2014, performed with Yandel). During his career, Perez also directed music videos for artists including Chayanne, Marc Anthony, Ricardo Arjona, Ricky Martin and Wisin & Yandel.[50]
The clip shows both artists performing while participating on different parties on the island. It also features Miss Universe 2006 model Zuleyka Rivera.[51] According to Luis Fonsi, the music video celebrates Latin American culture, saying that movement, dancing and rhythm are "engraved into his bones". He also affirms that part of the song's success was the reception of the fans, capturing the best of Fonsi's romantic ballad and danceable facets.[52]
Two weeks after its release, it became the quickest Spanish-language music video to reach 100 million views.[53][54] It later became the fastest one to reach 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900 million views on YouTube. The clip received an honorable mention on WatchMojo.com's Top Ten Best Music Videos of January 2017.[55] As of overall YouTube milestones, the music video of "Despacito" peaked as the second fastest music video to reach 500, 800 and 900 million views and the third one to reach 200, 300, 600 and 700 million views.[56] On 18 March 2017, it surpassed "Chantaje" by Shakira and Maluma as the worldwide most-viewed music video of YouTube in 2017. As of April 2017, it has more than 930 million views.
