Danger Mouse (1981 series) |
Danger Mouse is a British children's animated television series and a continual on the 1981 series of the same name. The series is produced by FremantleMedia with animation by Boulder Media and began airing on CBBC from September 28, 2015.[1]
The series revolves around the exploits, (which are sometime bizarre) of Danger Mouse the "World's greatest secret agent", and his hamster sidekick Penfold; who protect the world from all sorts of danger, most often from his arch-nemesis, Baron von Greenback; with support from their boss, Colonel K, and the genius scientist Professor Squawkencluck.
Production
In 2013, FremantleMedia confirmed to Broadcast that a reboot of the series was being considered,[2][3] and in June 2014 it was announced that a new series was being made for broadcast on CBBC in 2015.[4] The reboot is produced by Boulder Media for FremantleMedia Kids. It is directed by Robert Cullen,[5] with Brian Cosgrove, one of the original creators being a creative consultant.[6] Alexander Armstrong and Kevin Eldon will be voicing Danger Mouse and Penfold, Dave Lamb will take the role of the narrator, whilst Stephen Fry and Ed Gaughan will take on the roles of Colonel K and Baron Greenback respectively.[7] Armstrong's Pointless co-host Richard Osman will also be appearing in the series as Professor Strontium Jellyfishowitz.[8] It was also announced that John Oliver would voice Dr Augustus P Crumhorn III and Lena Headey would voice new character Jeopardy Mouse.[9] It will also be aired on Netflix in the US.[10] According to Eldon, the animation style is 'much the same as the original'.[11]
Characters
Main characters
- Danger Mouse (voiced by Alexander Armstrong)
- Ernest Penfold (voiced by Kevin Eldon) - A hamster and Danger Mouse's sidekick. He has an obsession with jam sandwiches.
- Colonel K (voiced by Stephen Fry): A Chinchilla who serves as Danger Mouse and Penfold's boss. In the episode "The Return of Danger K", it is revealed that the Colonel was once an agent himself called Danger K.
- Baron Silas von Greenback (voiced by Ed Gaughan) – Though Greenback was a mainstay of the 1981 series, in the 2015 series, the word "von" has been incorporated into his name. He was also given a German accent to match.
- Professor Squawkencluck (voiced by Shauna Macdonald): Chief scientist of the secret service and presumably the niece of the original version of the character from the original series. She gets annoyed with Danger Mouse when he doesn't pay attention to her, uses her inventions without her permission, or breaks/messes with her latest creation, to the point where she seems to view him as being incompetent.
- Stiletto Mafiosa (voiced by Dave Lamb): Greenback's crow sidekick.
Recurring characters
- Count Duckula (voiced by Rasmus Hardiker)
- Doctor Augustus P. Crumhorn III (voiced by John Oliver)
- Jeopardy Mouse (voiced by Lena Headey):[9] The female American equivalent of Danger Mouse. Clad in a slick military jumpsuit, she performs her missions professionally and without fuss- but has a tendency to be overbearing and take herself too seriously.
- The Narrator (voiced by Dave Lamb)
- Nero (voiced by Marc Silk): Greenback's pet fluffy white caterpillar.
- Pandaminion (voiced by Ed Gaughan): A minion of Greenback's.
Other characters
- Big Head (voiced by Shauna MacDonald): Squawkencluck's defence computer turned bad. Parody of Max Headroom.
- Birch Badboy (voiced by Richard Ayoade): A punk squirrel who tried to cause an outbreak of rudeness.
- Dr. Loo-cifer (voiced by Kayvan Novak): An advanced robotic toilet gone rogue.
- Dawn/The Princess (voiced by Morwenna Banks): A young spoiled poodle who becomes powerful after her tiara comes into contact with personality-amplifying mind gel
- Evans (voiced by Paul Morgans): An extraterrestrial Welsh plant.
- Ian (voiced by Rasmus Hardiker): DM's supposedly biggest fan who tried to "collect" DM and his allies.
- Isambard Kingkong Brunel (voiced by Kayvan Novak): A scientist monkey who comes up with impractical inventions. Parody of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
- Ivana the Invisible: An invisible supervillain who allied with Badboy.
- Lionel: A gigantic spider accidentally awakened by Penfold.
- Professor Strontium Jellyfishowitz (voiced by Richard Osman):
- Quark (voiced by Ed Gaughan): An alien who tries to use DM in money-spinning schemes. Possibly a re-imagined version of J.J. Quark from the original series, or a reference to Quark, the barman on Deep Space Nine, a member of the notoriously avaricious Ferengi race.
- The Queen (voiced by Morwenna Banks)
- Space Bees (queen voiced by Morwenna Banks): Alien insectoids responsible for destroying Evans' kind.
- Snowman: A living snowman with the ability to freeze anything.
- Tutankha-Moo: An Egyptian, cow-based villain who allied with Badboy
- Queen of Weevils (voiced by Miranda Richardson): A Queen who escaped Merlin's clutches and now wants to take over the world.[12]
- Hysteria (voiced by Lindsey Russell): A super-villain snake.[13]
