"Dalla Dalla" (stylized in all caps; Korean: 달라달라; lit. Different Different) is the debut single by South Korean girl group Itzy, released by JYP Entertainment on February 10, 2019.[1] It was released alongside its music video, and was made available as a digital single titled It'z Different, which features "Want It?" as the B-side.[2] Written by Galactika, the song is a "fusion" track including elements of house and hip hop in which the group emphasizes themes of individuality and self confidence.
Upon release, the song attained commercial success, peaking at number two on both the Gaon Digital Chart and Billboard's World Digital Songs chart. The song was certified Platinum by Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) after surpassing 100 million streams on the Gaon Chart, making it the first debut song by a K-pop group to earn this certification. At the time of release, the song's music video achieved the highest number of views for a K-pop group's debut video, with 17.1 million views in 24 hours.[3] The remix version of the song appeared on the group's debut EP, It'z Icy, on July 29, 2019. It is the fourth track on their first mini-album.
On January 22, Itzy released their first English EP Not Shy (English Version), featuring the English version of Dalla Dalla, along with English versions of their other title tracks Icy, Wannabe and Not Shy.
Composition
"Dalla Dalla" is written by music production team Galactika (별들의전쟁).[4] The song is composed in the key signature of B Minor and carries an average tempo 125 beats per minute.[5] It has been described as a lively and upbeat "fusion groove" song that includes elements of popular genres, such as EDM, dance, hip-hop and house.[6] "Dalla" (달라) means "different" in Korean, with lyrics including: "I'm different from other kids/Don't try to measure me by your standards/I love myself, I'm somewhat different, yeah/I'm different from you."[7]

IZM[8] |
Tamar Herman of Billboard called the track an "empowering anthem, introducing ITZY as a group that's an alternative to its peers," as well as "feisty and quick to shift tempos and genres," highlighting its "hip-hop breakdowns" throughout.[1] Writing for Kotaku, Seung Park judged it to be an "eclectic mashup of a mature version of some of Red Velvet's more esoteric work with Blackpink or 2NE1's hip-hop-esque aesthetic." Park also named it the "K-Pop Pick of the Day," saying it is a "solid opening bell of what is shaping up to be a long and interesting career."[9] Lee Jeong-ho called the track a "fusion" of the "merits of various genres such as EDM, house, hip hop and so on."[10]
Taylor Glasby from Dazed ranked the song at number 8 on "The 20 Best K-pop Songs of 2019" writing that the song "evokes two outlandish 90s moments: the wobbly bass of Mr Oizo's 'Flat Beat' and the brat-pop of Shampoo's 1995 single 'Trouble'…'Dalla Dalla' owes more to its artists' personalities, and despite several coats of K-pop polish, embodies that same scrappy energy and ballsy confidence."[11]

It was the first debut song by a K-pop group to earn a Platinum certification from the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) since the certification was introduced in April 2018.[40] "Dalla Dalla" ranked 11th on the Gaon Year-End Digital Chart, making it the best-performing girl group song and second best-performing idol group song of 2019 in South Korea.[41]
