Colt SSP (Stainless Steel Pistol)
The Colt Manufacturing participated in the US Military trial program to select a new handgun which took place over several years and was run a total of three times. This prototype trial designation was the XM9 Handgun Trial which was conducted by the Joint Service Small Arms Program.
The Trials requirement was for each manufacturer who was interested in obtaining a contract for 325 thousands handguns to submit 30 examples of their proposed handgun for testing. Colt submitted this design known as the Colt Stainless Steel Pisol (SSP).[1] This handgun did not complete the test and so was not considered.[2] Testing procedures are discussed in the book Future Weapons.[3] and also at Firearms Radio XM9 Testing
The example pistol shown on this page is in the small arms museum at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, MD.
