Song |
"Coffee Shop" is a song of lounge-jazz genre performed by the South Korean male idol music group B.A.P. It was released as a digital single on June 28, 2013 under the record label of TS Entertainment and distributing label of LOEN Entertainment. It is first of the three promotional singles from their third EP Badman released on August 6, 2013.[1][2]
Production
"Coffee Shop" is a softer and more simpler song compared to previous releases by B.A.P and is their first take on jazz style music. The song is written and composed by the music producer duo of Kang Jiwon and Kim Kibum, who have previously worked on successful hits with other artists from record label of TS Entertainment, including Secret for "Magic", "Shy Boy", and "Starlight Moonlight", as well as B.A.P themselves for "Warrior", "Power", and "One Shot".[1] The group also collaborated with the pianist Song Young-joo for the instrumental part of the track.[3] It was revealed that B.A.P had travelled to USA to shoot the scenes for music video of the song, visiting several iconic places including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Santa Monica, San Francisco, Washington D.C. and New York City.[4]
Release
The title of the song and its release date were announced on June 18, 2013 along with the revelation of first teaser image.[5] The video teaser was released the next day.[4] After the release of individual teaser images of the members supporting a more mature look,[6] the music video for "Coffee Shop" was uploaded on the official YouTube channel of TS Entertainment on June 27, 2013.[3] The single itself was released for digital download through various music portal sites such as Soribada and Olleh Music on June 28, 2013.
Reception
M! Wave gave the song a rating of 4.5 out of 5 and noted it to be bittersweet, simple and relaxing. The reviewer praised the 'elegant' sound brought by the jazz pianist Song Young-joo "which slowly fills the emptiness around until there’s just no more room... and yet, we don’t feel suffocated..." The critic went on to praise the 'beautiful' visuals of the music video and the members for "pushing the pause button in some of the busiest cities in the US."[7] Allkpop gave the song a reviewer rating of 8.9 of 10. Apart from noting "Coffee Shop" to be softer, simpler and "a nice break from the usual", the site also praised Himchan, Jong Up and Zelo for taking on on the most extensive singing parts.[8]
