Clarice Evone Phelps (née Salone) is an American chemist and researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She was part of the team involved with the discovery of element 117, Tennessine.[1] She studies actinide and lanthanide separations for medical isotopes.
Early life and education
Phelps earned a Bachelors degree in chemistry from Tennessee State University in 2003.[2][3] She graduated from the University of Tennessee with a PhD in chemistry in 2014.[4] She is an alumna of the Tennessee Aquatic Project.[5] Phelps completed a Masters degree at the University of Texas at Austin Nuclear and Radiation Engineering Program.[6]
Career
In 2004 Phelps joined the United States Navy working as an engineering lab technician.[7] She won the military excellence award in 2004.[8] She joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a nuclear operation technician in 2009. Phelps works in the isotopes group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where she is program manager for the Ni-63/ Se-75.[9] In 2010, she was involved in the discovery of Tennessine, element 117, as part of the team that accomplished "the purification of the Bk-249 used to help discover Z=117", Tennessine.[10] [11]
Phelps won the YWCA Knoxville Tribute to Women in 2017.[12][13][12] She works with the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority to develop robotics programs for young people.[12] Phelps is on the education committee for Oak Ridge National Laboratory.[12]
Phelps is a member of the American Chemical Society as well as the Educational Outreach Committee for the Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate.[10]
