The estimated number of Christians in the world ranges from 1.5 billion to 2.1 billion people[1]. Composed of around 34,000 different denominations, Christianity is the world's largest religion.[2] Christians have composed about 33 percent of the world's population for around 100 years.
Christianity is the predominant religion in Europe, Russia, the Americas, the Philippines, Southern Africa, Central Africa and East Africa.[3] There are also large Christian communities in other parts of the world, such as Central Asia, where Christianity is the second-largest religion after Islam. The United States is the largest Christian country in the world by population, followed by Brazil and Mexico[4].
Christianity, in one form or another, is the state religion of the following 16 nations: Argentina (Roman Catholic Church)[5], Armenia (Armenian Apostolic Church)[6], Bolivia (Roman Catholic Church)[7], Costa Rica (Roman Catholic Church)[8], Denmark (Danish National Church)[9], El Salvador (Roman Catholic Church)[10], England (Church of England)[11], Greece (Church of Greece), Iceland (Church of Iceland)[12], Liechtenstein (Roman Catholic Church)[13], Malta (Roman Catholic Church)[14], Monaco (Roman Catholic Church)[15], Norway (Church of Norway)[16], Vatican City (Roman Catholic Church)[17], Switzerland (Roman Catholic Church, Swiss Reformed Church and Christian Catholic Church of Switzerland) and Georgia (Georgian Orthodox Church).

Claims to be the fastest-growing religion
- Christianity has been estimated to be growing rapidly in South America, Africa, and Asia. In Africa, for instance, in 1900, there were only 8.7 million adherents of Christianity; now there are 390 million, and it is expected by 2025 there will be 600 million Christians in Africa. The number of Catholics in Africa has increased from one million in 1902 to 329,882,000. There are now 1.5 million churches whose congregations account for 46 million people. In every hour, 667 African Muslims convert to Christianity. Everyday, 16,000 African Muslims convert to Christianity. Ever year, 6 million African Muslims convert to Christianity. These numbers are very large indeed[38][39][40].
- The U.S. Center for World Mission claimed a growth rate of 2.3% for the period 1970 to 1996, (slightly higher than the world population growth rate at the time). This increased the claimed percentage of adherents of Christianity from 33.7% to 33.9%.[41]
- The US Department of State estimates that Protestant Christianity may have grown 600% over the last decade in Vietnam.[42]
- It is estimated that Orthodoxy is the fastest growing religion in Norway with a growth rate from 2000 to 2009 at 231.1%.[43]
- Officially, 99% of Algeria’s 33 million population are Sunni Muslims. Algeria’s Protestant Churches claim 50,000 followers. Joel Rosenberg in his book Epicenter reports that more than 80,000 Muslims have turned to Christianity in Algeria in recent years. There are strict laws against evangelism in Algeria. According to the Islam Watch website, some 2 million Muslims in Russia converted to Christianity last year. Islam Watch also reports that 10,000 French Muslims converted, as did 35,000 Turkish Muslims. They also claim 10,000 Muslims converting to Christianity in India last year. Chuck Colsen also reports that more than 5,000 Muslims in Iraq have converted to Christianity since the American military overthrew Saddam Hussein[44].
- The numbers of Christians in Nigeria has grown from 21.4% in 1953 to 48.2% in 2003. In South Africa, Pentecostalism has grown from 0.2% in 1951 to 7.6% in 2001. In South Korea, Christianity has grown from 20.7% in 1985 to 29.3%[45].
- The World Christian Database as of 2007 estimated the growth rate of Christianity at 1.32%. High birth rates and conversions were cited as the main reason.[46]
- From the period between 2000 and 2005, Pentecostalism experienced a global growth rate of 488% expanding from 115 million to 588.5 million[47] global adherents. This classes Pentecostalism as the fastest growing religion world wide.[48]
- Using data from the period 2000-2005 the 2006 Christian World Database estimated that by number of new adherents, Christianity was the fastest growing religion in the world with 30,360,000 new adherents in 2006. This was followed by Islam with 23,920,000 and Hinduism with 13,224,000 estimated new adherents in the same period.[49]
