Since the most recently concluded stand up comedy competition, that was organised by MNET africa in 2009, and screened on MNET East Africa, the reality TV Show, Stand up Uganda has seen the creation of a variety of Ugandan Comics. Before the competition, the comedy field in Uganda was dominated by Kenneth Kimuli, (also known as Pablo). Uganda now boasts of witty comics like Alex Muhangi (also known as Aleku) of the Tumbavu fame, and by far the most entertaining with jokes about his ethnicity. He is a music producer by proffession. Patric Idringi (also known as Salvado) is an engineer by proffession and also the pioneer of Ugandas first stand up comedy club "The Crackers." Daniel Omara (also known as Danni) is a teacher by proffession, and never ceases to crack up the crowd with self targeted jokes mainly about the LUO people of northern Uganda, an ethnic group he owes his ancestry. The most intriguing of them all is Kizito Makanga, with the famous slogan, "Do not cut my name short." By this he is referring to the "Kizito" name, which litteraly means "heavy", but if shortened to Kizi, would mean some thing so offensive in Luganda, the local language of Uganda. This gentleman is a shocker, for he is a Medical Doctor by proffession! |

There are many up coming comics in Uganda, and the biggest comedy club is the Crackers Comedy Club, which was started on the 2nd of June 2009. It had seven founding members, including Patrick Idringi, Daniel Omara, Kizito Makanga, Emmanuel Sebakigye, Alex Muhangi, Balads Mugyenyi, and Kenneth Mulalu. In its one year of existence, it has managed to groom a number of comedians including Dolibondo Felix, Prince Emmah, and Cotilda Inapo. It has live performances and TV recording Shows every Wednesday at effendy's centenary Park. They also have a weekly TV program called Mike Check on NTV |

The second biggest stand up comedy establishment in Uganda is Pablo Live, that show cases every friday, with five parmanent comedians, including Kenneth Kimuli (Pablo); Bob and Simiyu, a duo that coined up the "double double" concept; Kizito Makanga, the doctor; and Herbert Segujja, an impressionist of the Ugandan president. |

February 2011 |
Africa’s comedians are among the funniest in the world and this month, M-Net’s COMEDY CLUB: LIVE IN MOMBASA pays tribute to some of the most memorable of the current crop of funny people! |
The Comedy Club franchise started two years ago on M-Net with two seasons of Comedy Club: Live in Lagos; the second season saw one of Uganda's best comedians, KENNETH KIMULI aka pablo make a representation on the Mnet stage in Lagos. |
Season III live in Mombasa now brings you two other Ugandan Stand-up Comedians to reckon with; the indomitable BOB NUWAGIRA, a Masters Student at Makerere University, and KIZITO MAKANGA, a young comic that will be graduating as a Medical Doctor come June 2011. Goodness! Medicine and comedy? Anyway they always say laughter is the best medicine. |
This time round, the 13-part stand-up comedy series which debuted to DStv viewers on M-Net earlier this year, is based in the tropically pretty coastal Kenyan city of Mombasa. |
Hosted by former Studio 53 presenter and entertainment personality Fareed Khimani and running until the end of March , the series has featured and continues to feature some of the hottest comedians in Africa, with its line-up including performers from Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, UGANDA and Zambia. |
The series format sees two comedians performing their stand-up routine each week, then sitting down to chat with Fareed about their careers in front of the Mic, the inspiration for their humor and much more. It you want to laugh, if you like a good joke, if you love razor sharp one-liners, then COMEDY CLUB: LIVE IN MOMBASA is the show for you! |
Biola Alabi, Managing Director for M-Net Africa, says that the series was developed to tap into a very important entertainment genre. “Comedy has always been one of the most important foundations of great television around the world. People love to laugh, and so this was our chance to give our audiences fun comedy, direct from some of Africa’s best loved comedians!” |
