Renewable energy is energy from a source which can be managed so that it is not subject to depletion in a human timescale. Sources include the sun's rays, wind, waves, rivers, tides, biomass, and geothermal. Renewable energy does not include energy sources which are traditionally thought to be dependent upon limited resources, such as fossil fuels and nuclear fission power. New technology (The Fischer-Tropsch process), however, may make these limited resources more widely available. The problem will then be dealing with the side-effects of burning hydrocarbons, namely global warming and acid rain. Solutions such as a carbon dioxide sink may help prevent the buildup of excess carbon in the atmosphere which could potentially cause a slowing of the North Atlantic Gyre [1].
