Bruce McAvaney (born 1954) is a legendary Australian sports broadcaster. He grew up in the Ferryden Park, South Australia.
He was renowned for his great commentary of Australian rules football matches during the 1980's and 1990s with the Seven Network. He is known for his exciting style and his use of the word 'special'.
In 2001, when Seven lost the rights to broadcast AFL, McAvaney was truly missed in the role of AFL commentator. However, he continued his role at the Seven Network as host of Sportsworld and today hosts many horse racing events on Seven, including the Melbourne Cup.
In early 2005, McAvaney appeared as a host on radio station SEN 1116 on The Insiders.
Following the Seven Network/Network Ten consortium's winning bid for the 2007-2011 Australian Football League television broadcasting rights in January 2006, it seems McAvaney will return to his favourite role, as a football commentator, in the near future.
