Bassam Adeel Jaleel is a Maldivian public figure and the current President of Football Association of Maldives. He was elected President of FAM in an election held in November 2016.[1]
Early Life
Bassam Adeel Jaleel was born in Malé, Maldives, to a political family. Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom are his uncles from his father Adeel Jaleel's side as his grandmother is Moominaa Abdul Gayoom. His Mother is Latheefa Adam. He attended Iskandar School and Majeediyya School in the Maldives for his Primary and Secondary Education between 1989 and 2000. He graduated in Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and Business Administration from the University of East London in 2010.
Bassam started playing football from a young age, he was selected for Under-19 Maldives National Team as well. Bassam’s Father Adeel Jaleel is one of the founder members of Club Valencia. Bassam played for Club Valencia and later became the club's Vice-Chair. Bassam is keen on business studies and economics and worked in Maldives Central Bank known as Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) as a manager prior to his career in football.
Career
Before being elected as President of Football Association of Maldives, Bassam served as the General Secretary of the organization. He was also the Vice-Chairman of a local football club, Club Valencia.[2][circular reference]
Since Bassam got elected as President of Football Association of Maldives in 2016, more facilities and training camps were built and there was an increment in allowances given to the national team players.[3][4]
Bassam is credited for rebuilding of the Maldives National Football Team by assembling a well-trained young squad within three years. FAM's youth development efforts during Bassam's tenure led to many successes for the National Team.
In 2018 the Maldives National Football Team won the first SAFF Championship in 10 years. SAFF Championship is the region's most prestigious football tournament.[5]
With a slogan of “Towards Future”, Bassam has created 8 Football Academies in 8 different zones in the Maldives for youth, women, and children of different age groups.[6] Bassam has initiated building different infrastructure for Football with the support of FIFA and AFC in the Maldives. [7] During the last couple of years, a lot of local players and coaches has been given the opportunity to travel abroad and improve their standings and get additional training and licenses. [8]
The Maldives Women's National Football Team was first formed in 2003. Bassam has given a lot of importance to improving Maldives National Women’s Football Team in his tenure and the team won a bronze medal in the 13th South Asian Games in December 2019. It’s the biggest achievement in the history of Women’s Football in Maldives. [9]
Personal Life
Bassam is married to Maldivian television personality, Aminath Maureena, commonly known as Maureen.[10] He has two children; Alavi Bassam Adeel and Zaharaa Bassam Adeel. Bassam is a football fanatic, loves music and enjoys reading and traveling.
