Song |
"Baby, Don't Cry" (alternatively "Mermaid's Tears"; Korean: 인어의 눈물; Chinese: 人鱼的眼泪) is a R&B-ballad song recorded and performed by South Korean boy group Exo. The song, released in both Korean and Chinese languages, performed well on Baidu and Sina music charts in China.
Production and release
The tight production of "Baby, Don't Cry" was carried out by a team of songwriters that included Kim Tae-sung, Im Kwang-wook, Andrew Choi, Ophelia and Kalle Engstrom. The part of the song was also originally used in the Exo's twenty-first debut video teaser, released on February 28, 2012, which featured accompanying choreography performed by the member Kai.
The Korean version of the song was included as the second track in the Korean version of group's first studio album XOXO released on June 3, 2013. The lyrics of this version were penned by Cho Yoon-kyung. The Chinese version of the song, titled "Mermaid Tears" was included in Chinese version of the album, released on the same date. Lyrics were provided by Wang Yajun.
Reception
A columnist from Seoulbeats praised the "Baby, Don't Cry" and commented that it "more than compensates" for the preceding track and lead single "Wolf" describing the latter as 'messy'. "...song uses a crystalline piano throughout paired with a stripped-down R&B beat. Even when it begins to add a little more, it never takes away from the members’ voices, letting listeners bask in their vocals. Even the raps are perfect, going for a softer sound that almost caresses your ear..." explained the critic.[1]
Chart performance
Upon release "Baby, Don't Cry" did well on music portal sites, landing at spot #2 on Naver, Soribada, Daum, Bugs and Monkey 3 real-time charts only behind the lead single from album "Wolf".[2]
