The Iran cartoon controversy regarding the Azeri language was a controversy which arose over a cartoon, published in the state owned newspaper "Iran" and drawn by an Azeri[1][2][3][4], which allegedly insulted the Azerbaijani language. Massive riots occurred throughout Iran over the cartoons. There were suspicions that many of the protests were started by pan-Turks, possibly from the Republic of Azerbaijan or Turkey, as evident by the pan Turk hand gestures made by some protesters, which is also used by the Grey Wolves of Turkey and Azerbaijan. It is estimated that hundreds, if not thousands, were arrested throughout the ordeal and several killed.[5] Mana Neyestani, the artist who drew the cartoon, and Mehrdad Ghasemfar, the editor-in-chief of "Iran", were arrested by government officials and the newspaper was closed down following the riots. The cartoon was published in the children's section of the May 12, 2006 issue of "Iran" and depicted a cockroach replying in the Azeri langauge.
