All three Hart district school modernization efforts have been under scrutiny from parent of students, board members, and other district staff. A recent Hart District audit revealed "questionable business practices and management of funds"[http://www.the-signal.com/?module=displaystory&story_id=33702&format=html 1]. Arroyo Seco Junior High School, Saugus High School, and Canyon High School are the three affected schools. Newspaper articles also revealed that these construction projects were not properly approved by the School Board before construction took place. Many students were angry at these revealments, but had previously suspected such activities. Said an Arroyo Seco Junior High School student, "This explains a lot. No wonder this modernization plan is being used, it wasn't approved. All this school was modernized for is to cut construction costs. If anything, the school has become worse since modernization. It is less accesible, there is no grass or trees, and no shade. Why do some Hart District students get to go to an amazingly beautiful campus such as Rio Norte JHS, and continue on the beautiful and modern Valencia High School? I am stuck to go through construction at Arroyo eco and Saugus. This district continues to fail me. I hate the Hart District". In a Signal article, a board member apologizes for the three projects not being as a big success as the new Golden Valley, West Ranch High Schools and Rio Norte and Rancho Pico JHS projects. To students at Canyon, Saugus, and Arroyo Seco, a simple apology doesn't cut it. They need a safe, peaceful, quiet, beautiful campus that was built with their needs in mind. |

The quad was completely redone over summer. Most students prefer the old quad. The old quad had grass to sit on, shady trees to sit under, and planters to sit on. The new quad takes away all grass students were able to sit on and replaced them with concrete benches , 7 palm trees that provide no shade, and plants the are off limits to students. The new quad is trying to be astetichally pleasy but comes off as ugl and impracitcal. The biggest problem students have with the quad are: a lack of shade, no grass to sit on, no shady trees, concrete benches are uncomfortable, extremely hot because of all the concrete, poor design, hard to walk through, and poor lighting. ==Student Feelings Toward Administration== |
|||
For many reasons, students are furious with administration. Here is one reason. Construction was scheduled to take 18 months. It is coming on 5 years. The school was not designed with students' interests in mind. The entire school has been rebuilt to keep maintenance costs low. The only patch of grass in the entire school other than the fields is about 5 square feet. Students are not allowed to step on it. The construction priorities are also very strange. Of all projects, building the extension of the administration building was completed in the first few months. The only time administrators talk about modernization is when they glorify it. Students resent them even more after this. Never once has any administrator said that they were sorry students were not going to benefit from something, or apologizing about haveing to run through construction smoke and dirt while running red laps. All that has ever been talked about is the "road ahead". |

Arroyo Seco Junior High School is a public junior high school in Saugus, California. It is a member of the William S. Hart Union High School District. Rhondi Durand, Cathy Novean, and Andy Keyne are the principals. It is the second oldest junior high school in the Santa Clarita Valley. Its mascot is the Conquistador and its colors are red and black.
Recent Developments
All three Hart district school modernization efforts have been under scrutiny from parent of students, board members, and other district staff. A recent Hart District audit revealed "questionable business practices and management of funds"1.

Staff
The current principal of Arroyo Seco Junior High School is Rhondi Durand. The asssistant pricipals are Andy Keyne and Cathy Novean. Arroyo Seco features a credited teaching staff of about 75 teachers. Core subject teachers are assigned to teach for a single team, however if one team is short a teacher for one period for some reason, a teacher with two off periods will teach for that team. All teachers teach 4 or 5 periods of core classes, depending on the size of the team. Most teachers who only teach 4 core classes will usually teach an elective class, or more rarely, a PE class. Arroyo Seco is known for its dedicated and passionate teaching staff that devotes a great amount of time to improve the wonderful courses they teach.
ASB
The Arroyo Seco ASB is the student government program class at Arroyo Seco. It is taught as a class for one period per day, with Shonna August as ASB advisor. Students in the ASB put together all student activities at the school. The whole jurisdiction of the ASB is "Anything that directly benefits students" with some exceptions. Some responsibilities that ASB holds are:
Arroyo Seco Student Store
All student dances
Character Cash
BirthdayBash©
Red Ribbon Week
Noontime events
Club Funding
Elective class funds
Overseeing team funds
Spirit Weeks
Magazine Drive
Certain aspects of campus beautification
All other funding that directly benefits students
