When she joined the musical, Grande left her high school, North Broward Preparatory School, but continued to be enrolled. The school sent materials to her so she could study with tutors.[12][13] In 2010, she created the original role of Miriam in the reading of the new musical, Cuba Libre, written and produced by Desmond Child.[12] Grande played the character Cat Valentine in the Nickelodeon television show Victorious, which premiered March 2010. In August 2011, it was also announced that Victorious was ending its run.[16] Grande tweeted stating that she was not hoping for it to end and was looking forward to being on both shows. It was announced during the network's presentation at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour on August 3, 2012 that Sam & Cat, which would pair Grande from Victorious and Jennette McCurdy from iCarly together in a traditional "buddy sitcom" setting, where they would reprise their roles as Cat Valentine and Sam Puckett.[17] Sam & Cat was picked up by Nickelodeon on November 29, 2012.[18] On July 11, 2013, Nickelodeon doubled Sam & Cat's season one twenty episode order, leading to season one having forty episodes.[19]
Grande sang as a soloist in various symphonies, such as South Florida’s Philharmonic, Pops and Symphonic Orchestras.[4] She has sung various times in NYC's Birdland.[4] Grande performed a rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the first-ever broadcast of the national anthem for the Florida Panthers.[4][12] Grande has performed covers of songs such as Mariah Carey's "Emotions" and "All I Want For Christmas Is You",[20][21] and Whitney Houston's "I Believe in You and Me".[22] The third soundtrack for Victorious was released on November 6, 2012, titled as Victorious 3.0. In 2012, Grande also sang a duet with MIKA on the single version of his track Popular Song.[23]
2013: Yours Truly
"They can expect a lot of honesty. It's like a direct... you know, it's like it used to be pages from my diary, instead of keeping diary, I would write songs about what was happening in my life. So it's really personal. It's a Motown throwback and pop at the same time, so it's '50s and '60s inspiration mixed with today."
— Ariana Grande, on the album.[24]
Grande completed her first studio album, Yours Truly, in June 2013.[25] It was released on September 2, 2013 in the UK,[citation needed] and a day later in the US.[26] The album was inspired by artists like Amy Winehouse, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry, Madonna, Sky Blue from LMFAO, 3OH!3, Kool Kojak, and Pebe Sebert.[27][28][29] Yours Truly officially debuted atop the Billboard 200 albums chart with 138,000 copies sold in its first week, becoming Grande's first number-one album as a solo artist.[30][31][32] This made Grande the fifteenth female artist and the first female artist to have their first album debut atop of the charts since January 2010, when Kesha's Animal opened at No. 1.[33][34] Yours Truly also debuted in the top ten in several other countries, including Australia where it debuted at number six,[35] the UK where it debuted at number seven,[36] Ireland where it debuted at number six,[37] and the Netherlands where it debuted at number five.[38] It also debuted just outside the top ten on New Zealand's top 40 albums chart at number eleven.[39]
On March 26, 2013, Ariana's first single from her debut album, "The Way" featuring Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller, was released.[40][41][42] It became a Top 40 hit and Top 10 hit [43][7][8] and also received certifications of Platinum in US (RIAA)[44] and Gold in Australia (ARIA).[45] "The Way" sold over 120,000 units in the first 48 hours.[46][47] Having sold over 219,000 units in its opening week, "The Way" holds the third best-selling first-week sales figure of 2013 behind Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie" and One Direction's "Best Song Ever".[48] "The Way" debuted at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on the week ending in April 5, 2013, becoming Ariana's and Miller's first Hot 100 top 10 hit. This makes Ariana the first top ten arrival for a lead female artist making her first Hot 100 appearance since Yael Naim, who launched with "New Soul" back in 2008. The single as since sold two million copies in the United States and has been certified double platinum by the RIAA. In December 2013, Grande was sued by Minder Music for supposedly copying some lyrics from the 1972 song "Troglodyte" by The Jimmy Castor Bunch in her hit song "The Way." [49]The album's second single, "Baby I", was released on July 22, 2013.[50]

Artistry
"I love Mariah Carey. She is literally my favorite human being on the planet. And of course Whitney [Houston] as well. As far as vocal influences go, Whitney and Mariah pretty much cover it. I love Fergie as well. She’s just so fun and passionate. I love that she raps as well. Like, she has a fantastic voice and she can belt Gs and As and she doesn’t have to do it all the time. She just has swag and I think that’s really cool.
— Ariana Grande, on her musical influences.[67]
Grande possesses a four-octave range reaching a high of E7.[68] Her voice has been compared to that of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.[69][70] Ariana expressed her feelings towards being compared to Mariah Carey as a "blessing".[71]
Her music is generally pop and contemporary R&B, and has features of funk, dance, and hip hop.[1][72]
Grande's debut is described as being half a "throwback" to the R&B music of the 1990s, and the second half she describes as "something that is very unique and very special that I've sort of written" which is completely original. In summation of the record she stated: "So half of it is a throwback and like very familiar feeling, feel-good, and then half of it is something that I've created that's sort of special and unique and refreshing and wonderful and I love it".[73]
Grande is mainly influenced by Mariah Carey, India.Arie and Whitney Houston.[12][67][74] She is also influenced by English singer, composer and songwriter Imogen Heap.[74] Grande is a big fan of Fergie describing her as "fun and passionate".[67][74] She grew up mainly listening to urban pop and 90s music.[72][74] Grande also describes Big Sean as her favorite rapper, with whom she is good friends.[72]
Personal life
From August 2012 to July 2013, Grande dated Jai Brooks, a member of the Australian YouTube group the Janoskians.[75][76][77]
In September 2013, after much speculation, Grande confirmed that she was in a relationship The Wanted's Nathan Sykes. Sykes also tweeted out the news to his fans and thanked everyone for being so lovely about it.[78][79] On October 7, 2013, Brooks accused Grande of cheating on him with Sykes before their relationship ended.[80] Grande later claimed she never cheated on him and he used that post as a way to get his "fifteen minutes of fame."[81]
Grande is a vegan[82] and has adopted three dogs.[83]
Grande was raised a Roman Catholic but has since abandoned Christianity after Pope Benedict said that Spongebob Squarepants, Harry Potter, being gay, and working women were all 'sins'. Grande stated, "I lost faith when the Pope decided to tell me that everything I loved and believed in was wrong." She has since converted to Kabbalah which is a offshoot of Judaism. She say the basis lies in the idea that if you’re kind to others, good things will happen to you. [84]
Philanthropy
At the age of 10, Grande co-founded the South Florida youth singing group Kids Who Care, which performed for charitable fund-raising events, raising over $500,000 for charities in 2007 alone.[12] In the summer of 2009, as a member of the charitable organization Broadway in South Africa, Grande performed and taught music and dance to children in Gugulethu, South Africa along with her brother Frankie.[5][9][85] Grande is also partnering with Kleenex on its "Shield Sneeze Swish" campaign.[24]
After watching Blackfish, she urged fans to stop supporting SeaWorld.[86]
