The Anthony Weiner photo scandal, also dubbed Weinergate,[1] is a sex scandal[2] resulting from Democratic United States Congressman Anthony Weiner's sending a link to a picture of his boxer-brief clad erect penis[3][4][5][6][3][4][5] via his Twitter account, to a 21-year-old woman in Bellingham, Washington,[7] who was "following" him on the social media website.[8]
He initially said that he had not posted the image, and that his account had been "hacked". Weiner later admitted that he had exchanged sexts with the woman, and that he had also been "engaged in several inappropriate conversations conducted over Twitter, Facebook, email and occasionally on the phone", and had exchanged "messages and photos of an explicit nature with about six women over the last three years". He added that he had never met or had a physical relationship with any of the women.[9]
Incident
On May 27, 2011, via his Twitter account, Weiner sent a post linking to a photograph of his erect penis clad in gray boxer briefs[10] to a 21-year-old woman in Bellingham, Washington, who was "following" him on the social media website.[11]
Initial media reports and Weiner's denial
The image was quickly removed from Weiner's Twitter account. The photo was leaked to the media, however, and on May 28, 2011, was posted by conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart to his BigGovernment.com website, along with a nearly 1,000-word blog post.[12][13]
Weiner at first refused to comment on the matter. Media coverage increased. On June 1, 2011, Weiner gave a series of initial interviews to the media in which he said that he had not sent the photo and that someone else sent the photo via his Twitter account. He said that he could not say "with certitude" that the photo was not of him, saying "maybe it did start being a photo of mine and now looks something different or maybe it is from another account".[14][15] Instead he suggest that perhaps the image was doctored.[16] Saying he viewed it as a prank, he did not ask the FBI or U.S. Capitol Police to investigate the incident,[17] but said he had retained a private security firm to look into the matter.[18] Later, Weiner said that someone, perhaps a political opponent, "hacked"[19][20] into his Twitter account and published the photo.
On June 6, 2011, Breitbart posted a cropped shirtless picture Weiner had sent to another woman on the Internet[21] and said that an additional social media contact of Weiner had been e-mailed,[22] at least one of which Breitbart claimed to be sexually graphic.[23]
Admission
On June 6, 2011, Weiner held an afternoon press conference in New York at which he admitted that he had lied in an attempt to conceal what really happened and confirmed that he had exchanged sexts with the woman in question. He also said that he had been "engaged in several inappropriate conversations conducted over Twitter, Facebook, email and occasionally on the phone", and had exchanged "messages and photos of an explicit nature with about six women over the last three years", adding that he had never met or had a physical relationship with any of them. He said he was "deeply ashamed of my terrible judgment and actions... This was a very dumb thing to do."[24]
Answering questions, he declined to deny that a published "X-rated" photo was of him. He said that he had his wife's continuing support and that he did not intend to resign his congressional seat.[25] Prior to his marriage to Abedin, Weiner was known for his "bachelor exploits with some of New York’s most eligible women," detailed in a 2011 Moment Magazine profile of the Congressman. In July of 2010 he married the glamorous and long-time aide to HIllary Clinton, at a ceremony officiated by Bill Clinton. Following the revelations of his inappropriate communications, his reportedly emotional apology to the former president was referred to in the press as highly ironic.[26][27] Asked about an allegation that he had engaged in phone sex with an additional internet partner (reported to be a woman in Nevada), Weiner neither confirmed nor denied the statement, saying that although he did not want to impinge the privacy of any of the women, neither would he contradict any of their statements.[24]
Explicit photo leak
On June 8, 2011, Breitbart showed radio hosts Opie and Anthony of Sirius XM Radio a photograph of nude genitalia. They subsequently leaked it by publishing it on Twitter.[28] Weiner's spokesperson said in a statement: "As Representative Weiner said on Monday when he took responsibility for his actions, he has sent explicit photos."[29]
Reaction
Media
On June 6, 2011, ABC News reported that a 26-year-old single mother from Texas, Meagan Broussard, had shared flirtatious photographs with Weiner, including receiving a photo of his exposed private parts.[30] At his press conference, Weiner admitted that he had exchanged sexts with the woman.[30][24] ABC News also reported the identity of another of Weiner's social media contacts, who had exchanged e-mails with Weiner and had received sexually explicit photograph of him in May 2011.[31][23] This story has also been fodder for late night television and talk shows. CBS’S David Letterman, who also has been involved in affairs and scandals, said, “Beautiful day in New York City. It was so nice today the entire staff was in Central Park writing Weiner jokes.” Jay Leno of NBC's The Tonight Show said: “Weiner finally spoke to the news media today. Apparently he wanted to wait until his pants came back from the dry cleaners." And Jimmy Fallon on the show Late Night made this remark: “It’s been a crazy few days. First Weiner admitted that he tweeted that photo of his crotch, and John Edwards was indicted for covering up an affair. Or, as Arnold Schwarzenegger put it, ‘Thank you, God. This is the best week ever!’[32]
Political
On the afternoon of June 6, 2011, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi announced that there would be an investigation by the House Ethics Committee to determine "whether any official resources were used or any other violation of House rules occurred".[33] A number of GOP congressmen called for Weiner's resignation. On June 7, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus called for him to resign, and challenged Pelosi to suggest the same. Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R, VA) said Weiner should resign. "The last thing we need is to be immersed in discussion about Congressman Weiner and his Twitter activities," Cantor said.[34] House Democrats calling for him to resign on June 8 included Representatives Allyson Schwartz (PA), Mike Ross (AR), Mike Michaud (ME), Niki Tsongas (MA), Larry Kissell (NC) and Joe Donnelly (IN).[35]
Two June 6 surveys of New York City residents provide conflicting results on whether Weiner should resign. A TV station NY1 and Marist College poll of New York City adults later that day indicated that 51% believed Weiner should remain in Congress, 30% thought he should step down, and 18% were unsure.[36] An automated survey of New York City adults conducted by WABC-TV and SurveyUSA found the city divided, with 46 percent who thought he should resign and 41 percent who thought he should stay in office.[37][38] A June 9 NY1-Marist Poll showed that 56% of registered voters in Weiner's district wanted him to stay in Congress, and 33% thought he should resign, with 12% uncertain.[39] 73% said he acted unethically but not illegally.[39]
