Andreas Günter Lubitz (18 December 1987[1] - 24 March 2015)[n 1] was a German pilot for the international airline Lufthansa. Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin, French and German authorities, as well as executives of Lufthansa, have issued statements that they believe that Lubitz deliberately crashed Germanwings Flight 9525 into the French Alps, killing himself along with 149 others in a mass murder suicide on 24 March 2015.[2][3][4][5][6]
Aviation authorities in Canada, New Zealand, and Germany have implemented new regulations that require two authorized personnel to be present in the cockpit at all times in direct response to the incident and the circumstances of Lubitz's involvement. The Federal Aviation Administration in the United States already requires two people to be in the cockpit at all times.[7][8][9] The European Union top air safety agency has recommended similar changes to be introduced.[9][10] A number of airlines announced similar changes to their policies.[7][11][12][13]
Early life
Lubitz was born in Montabaur in the Rhineland-Palatinate area of Germany.[14] His mother was a piano teacher and his father was a business executive. Lubitz took flying lessons at the local Luftsportclub Westerwald.[15] He trained as a pilot at the Lufthansa Flight Training school in Bremen.[15] Lubitz was a keen runner and ran the Frankfurt half-marathon in 2011, 2012 and 2013.[15] Lubitz worked part-time in Burger King where his manager described him as "dependable and inconspicuous."[16]
Lubitz received pilot training through Lufthansa Flight Training and piloted planes at the Lufthansa Airline Training Center in Goodyear, Arizona.[17] He visited San Francisco, where he was photographed posing near the Golden Gate Bridge and posted the photo to Facebook.[18] Lubitz took time off from his flight training, due to an onset of depression. He later completed the training, and worked as a flight attendant before becoming a pilot for Lufthansa.
Lubitz spent a year and a half receiving psychiatric treatment. Several times he was forced to repeat his flying classes because of depression, before he successfully finished his training. In 2009, he was diagnosed with a Major Depressive Disorder and given a “special regular medical examination” by a doctor as well as the coding “SIC”. Universitäts-Augenklinik Düsseldorf put out a statement that Lubitz had received treatment for a condition other than depression on 10 March.[19] This coding also appeared on his Medical Certificate which apparently made him tear up grounding notes from his physician on the day of the crash.[16][20][21][22][23][24]
Germanwings Flight 9525 crash
German police searched Lubitz' apartment on 26 March 2015.[25] They subsequently issued a statement that Lubitz had been hiding an unspecified existing illness from his employer.[26] Prosecutors said the seized medical documents from Lubitz’s home indicated “an existing illness and appropriate medical treatment.” Among the documents found there were sick notes – torn-up, current and for the day of the crash – leading to the provisional assessment that the deceased was hiding his illness from his employer.[26]
Notes
- ^ There is some disagreement in the sources as to the age of Lubitz. Some sources state that Lubitz was 28 years old, but the date of birth cited by The New York Times would indicate that he was 27 years old when he died.
