2013 boycott of Israeli academic institutions
In April 2013, the Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS) voted to boycott Israeli universities and academic institutions.[2] It was joined in December by the ASA, which has more than 5000 members, and voted by a majority of two thirds the boycott of all Israeli educational institutions.[3] The reasons given were "Israel's violation of international law and UN resolutions; the documented impact of the Israeli occupation on Palestinian scholars and students; [and] the extent to which Israeli institutions of higher education are a party to state policies that violate human rights." Israeli officials and the ADL reacted in stating that political and academical debates should not be mixed and accused the ASA of discrimination against Israel and "Orwellian antisemitism". As of December 23, 2013, 26 universities have condemned the boycott as, in the words of Harvard University President Drew Gilpin Faust, "a direct threat to these ideals, ideals which universities and scholarly associations should be dedicated to defend.”[4] As a result of the boycott's curtailment of academic freedom, Kenyon College, Penn State Harrisburg, Brandeis University, and the Indiana University withdrew their membership.[5]
